A Full English Breakfast - Bacon and Eggs A British Tradition

By

It's A British Thing!

There is nothing better than getting up in the morning and smelling that gorgeous aroma of bacon. it steals up the stairs and meanders around the room before, whoosh! straight up your nose! So what is it about a good old English breakfast that is better than anything else in the world? Well for a start it has to be cooked in a certain way. The bacon has to be crisp, but not too well done. The eggs have to have a certain consistency. I prefer 'sunny side up' as my mum and her mum before her have always called it. And of course we have to have fried bread! Yum! I can all but taste it now. In fact when I have time today I will be eating a very large Full English Breakfast for my evening meal! You see, it doesn't have to be in the morning. In fact I am not very good at eating first thing, apart from when I go on vacation or or a short break, then I get up early, go for a long walk and then worn out and gasping for a drink, I go back to the hotel for a nice cuppa, and a Full English.

Full English Breakfast Or Fry Up

Making me Hungry!

So, what is this magical breakfast that can cause so much controversy? By controversy I mean that there is always someone moaning about it being too fatty, or too greasy! Not good for the health, etc, and so on and so forth! It's usually the people who are as fat as a tub of lard themselves that moan at others for eating it. Jealousy! That's what it is. Hee Hee

Edward Bernays was the first person to bring to our language the term, Full English Breakfast. Evidently he was an owner of a shop that sold bacon, so he came up with the idea of promoting it with a slogan and the above term came into being, along with 'Bacon and Eggs'.

Below I will be giving you the full list of this lovely fattening, or not, all depending on how you cook it!, meal that we in Britain seem to be addicted to!

Getting Hungrier!

There are quite a few ingredients in a Full English Breakfast. This doesn't just contain the cooked food, but also added side dishes such as cereals and toast.

So if you were to sit down to eat, what should you expect?

Full English Breakfast Ingredients.

First of all we have Cereals. There are lots to choose from, starting with Wheatabix to Sugarpuffs. I prefer Sugarpuffs myself! I like the honey monster. If you haven't seen the advert, then you don't know what your missing!

So, after we sit down, we have a choice of Cereal to start, or if you prefer, Toast. Add butter or strawberry jam, raspberry jam, or English Marmalade. I prefer the Orange Marmalade but if you prefer something different, then why not try Lemon Marmalade?

Then comes the best of all.

The Fry Up!

This consists of bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, sausages, baked beans and fried bread. Some people prefer toast with it, but I always love to eat the fried bread.

Now, if you like your food lovely and greasy, you can fry most of the above. But I must admit to grilling the bacon, sausages, and tomatoes.

How to Make The Full English Breakfast or Fry Up.

Get yourself a nice big frying pan, that way you can do most of the cooking at the same time.

Place the fat or oil in the pan, leave it for a few seconds to get hot, then add the bacon and sausages.

Make sure that you keep turning the meat until it is cooked to your satisfaction. Some people prefer their bacon to be quite soft, I much prefer it to be nearly burned! But that's my opinion.

If you don't like fried tomatoes, then this is the time to put them in the grill. You can add a tiny bit of butter to the tomatoes or if you want to get a lovely taste out of them, add some Basil. This herb is made for tomatoes, it brings out their flavour, making the taste so much stronger. Just sprinkle the dried herbs over the tomatoes and then grill.

To cook the eggs, either do them seperately or in the pan with the bacon. I prefer to cook them seperately as that way they won't retain so much of the oil from the bacon and sausages.

With the eggs, you can either fry them or scramble them. The traditional way is sunny side up, which is when the yolk stays lovely and yellow.

The mushrooms I always buy in a tin. It is much more convenient, but of course you can cook fresh mushrooms as well.

Fried bread is a bit more difficult to master! The amount of times I have burned it, I can count on both hands! When the bacon and sausages are cooked, place them on a warm dish and pour nearly all of the oil away, leaving just a small amount in the pan. Then add a couple of slices of bread. When you place the bread in the pan, make sure that you leave it to cook before turning it over. This way it will stop it getting to soggy. When it is done, it will look like toast but with more of a dark sheen on it.

Add the baked beans. Either pour them in a saucepan and heat or use the frying pan to add a bit more flavour.

Regional Additions.

Black Pudding. In some parts of England people add such ingredients as Black Pudding. This consists of a type of sausage made from blood! This is usually pig or cattle blood. It is filtered until it is thick enough to congeal. Not for me thanks.

Bubble and Squeak. This is an old English recipe which comes from the second World War when there was not a lot of food to go around, and as my mother always used to say, 'don't you leave anything on your plate, there are starving children in the world'! Bubble and Squeak is made from the leftover vegetables like Potato and Cabbage. but you can also use Carrots, Peas And Brussel Sprouts. All you need to do is mix them all together and then fry them up until they are brown and yummy!

Obviously there are so many other ingridients such as kidneys, potato waffles, and hash browns. I personally prefer the good old English chip.

A Nice Cup Of Tea.

And of course we couldn't finish this without mentioning the good old English Cuppa Char! There are two ideas about the word Char. Some sources say Char comes from the Indian word for tea, but there is another idea that it probably comes from the Chinese word Tcha. Anyway, that's what we call it! A nice cuppa Char!

Boil the kettle, get out your teapot, or if you haven't got a teapot, just use your cup, and add one teabag to your cup, or if you do use the tea pot, add one teabag per person, and one for the pot, as the old saying goes! Then just pour in the boiling water, wait for it to brew, and there you go! Add milk and sugar to taste. Some people prefer lemon, but hey I don't get this at all! But then I am common!

Other drinks are obviously Coffee, and plain iced water.

And of course you can drink Orange Juice, which is something that I especially like.

So there you have it. Now get stuck in!

I like breakfasts when I do eat, lol..

Wow.. this kind of meal you presented would be enough for a whole day!!!

I did like the breakfasts like this when we were there in the UK, yummy. I like bacon and eggs in general. I do not buy bacon anymore...

The only thing was that I got sick with strep throat midway during the time we were there.

It was the one and only time I ever had strep throat so you can imagine..could not eat.

We do this in the Philippines, Nell. Eat a large breakfast. We eat 5 times a day there..two teas, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, in addition to three full course meals.

A friend in UK was asking me yesterday why the Asian women get big when they move to UK..I had no answer..maybe it is because they need the extra layer of fat to insulate them from the cold.

Petra Vlah 20 months ago

Now I know why I will never fit into the Anglo-Saxon way of life!

Just the though of smelling bacon first thing in the morning gives me a migraine while the smell of coffee and cigarettes makes me happy. Just like most Latin fools I will stick with it and admire the smart, responsible and health conscious people from a respectable distance.

Gypsy48 20 months ago

Nell what a delicious hub! While visiting London I enjoyed a few full English breakfasts. Loved them, didn't think about fat or calories, just devoured everything except the plate.

dkrainwater 20 months ago

Great hub, I am hungry now:)

Morning Nell... as I read the house has the smell of bacon cooking on the stove right now... timely I should read this now... smiles... sunday noon is the time for a favorite meal in this house as we always have the same....

Blessings and Hugs

Nell Rose 20 months ago

Hi, Melinda, wow I can't believe the amount of meals you mentioned! I can only eat one meal a day and maybe a sandwich, I just don't eat that much, in answer to the question you mentioned about Asian people getting bigger over here, it is probably because they eat more western food, which is bad you know! ha ha thanks again nell

Hi, Petra, thanks for reading it, I am like you apart from the cigarette, I can just drink tea or coffee in the morning, I prefer this meal in the evening, thanks again nell

Hi, Gypsy, ha ha that's how it's meant to be eaten! I often see films where Americans eat pancakes for breakfast and I think that is strange, isn't it funny how we all do things differently where cooking is concerned? thanks again nell

Hi, dk, who you like me to cook it for you? ha ha glad you liked it, cheers nell

Hi, Quill, I can smell your cooking bacon! lol that is one of the best things on a Sunday, bacon and eggs! We do that too only about 1 o clock after going for a walk! thanks as always, nell

I must first tell you my 14 year old daughter loves quantum physics AND plans to make this her lifes work.

Breakfast is such a great celebration on weekends. I love a great big English Breakfast, We do so every weekend at least one morning. The cast iron you highlight here is a must, I cook everything in cast iron, plus bake as well.

The tea, well can't have a grand full English Breakfast without the tea. Love the tea pots. Now I'm hungry.

Greeat post on breakfast and how to do it right! Peace :)

Nell Rose 20 months ago

Hi, Katiem2, that's really interesting that your daughter is interested in Quantum Physics, what a great job to get into, I am so jealous, I wish I had studied properly when I was young, but we get distracted. Thanks for reading this, and I eat bacon and eggs every sunday, the rest of the week seems to be a bit manic, so I don't have time, but I do love it! thanks so much nell

Green Lotus 20 months ago

Nell, Full English Breakfast is probably one meal I will never pass up. I'm positively cruel to myself when it comes to passing up American fast food and lovely desserts of all nations, but FEB is never a never. We get a pretty decent one at Fado's Irish Pub in Atlanta, and of course I must order my puddings from Tommy Maloney's on-line. I don't think I've ever had a bad English Breakfast in the UK, even in the most awful hotel! ...and it goes great with Quantum Physics too!! Your hub is Great stuff (as always a treat). My mouth is watering :)....

Nell Rose 20 months ago

Hi, Green Lotus, it is one of the best things we have over here! lol I remember you saying that you like visiting here, now I know what it is that brings you all the way over! lol I do love my Quantum Physics too! maybe if I combined the two I can 'think' a plate of bacon and eggs and it will appear in front of me! ha ha thanks again nell

Alas, if I eat more than a grain of rice a day I gain weight.

Nell Rose 20 months ago

Hi, Micky, surely with all that cycling you need at least three plates of this! hee hee thanks again

..Nell, I will be over first thing in the morning - whether it's your morning time zone or my morning time zone is another matter entirely - lol lol - but I love this hub - because it's so hubdelicious in many ways.

...and yes a nice cuppa tea never hurt anyone - I can have mine anytime anyplace - although coffee is what I drink upon starting my day and at work.

I have been enjoying blood/black pudding and haggis as of late with a little bit of cranberry jelly on the side with toast and eggs - well you get the picture - after that meal I just want to go back to bed and make the world go away ....... lol - yes this is a wonderful mouth watering hub - it's midnight now and I can hardly wait for the morning to arrive - thanks to you - lol

FLYSCO 20 months ago

It's easy to be put off black pudding if you know what it's made from, but if you've eaten it from childhood and just like the taste, it's a great extra in the breakfast. It comes from an era of wasting nothing. In a way, that's an attitude that respects the beast you've slaughtered! Enjoyed the hub :)

sheila b. 20 months ago

Like you, I like my breakfast in the evening. So now, after reading this hub of yours, that's what I'm going to do one night this week.

Hello, hello, 20 months ago

Nothing but a good English Breakfast. It really set you up.

SilentReed 20 months ago

The chinese tradition of taking tea (tsa) with every meal is one way to reduce the harmful effect of such heavy fat saturated meals. Hongkong was a british colony for 99 years. So have a hearty English breakfast with tea and not to worry about the health issues.

Sa`ge 20 months ago

Oh my Bubble and squeak, I have that a few times a week :D

mostly for lunch sometimes dinner. Try it with some crated cheese sometime. it is onolicious as we say here. I think we here in Hawaii have the English to thank for our breakfast habits of eating. Why do I say that? well, if you trade the beans for rice you got a good ole Hawaiian Breakfast. the English were here long before the Americans were. LOL I love fried bread better then toasted.

Great hub my Dear, had me running for some food. haha BTW, onolicious is half Hawaiian-ono and half Englis-licious one of our pidgin words. ofcourse when used together it means extremely good! aloha Dear

Merlin Fraser 20 months ago

Keep it up Nell...Between us we will convert the World.... Yeah even unto Black Pudding !

Trouble is the bowl of Cornflakes I had no longer feels adequate !

Pollyannalana 19 months ago

Don't think you can get 101 but I will try. Yea I tell you what I love is that bacon w/bacon gravy poured over red ripe tomatoes with toast or biscuits.(My husband passes on the tomatoes but I got started on those from our garden as a kid and yum yum!) Why no one ever fixes bacon gravy I have no idea. I allow it to our family twice a year,(although it probably is better for you than sausage gravy-or no worse) if you haven't tried it you should, you already have the bacon grease and you really only need a little, pour some off if there is a lot and brown the flour in it a little for tangy flavor before adding milk. Yummy hub! I want bacon!

CMHypno 19 months ago

Well, you have made me hungry Nell! But I like my bacon sacrificed - very crispy! Mouth watering hub!

Nell Rose 19 months ago

Hi, epi, so I will expect you over in the morning then! lol I don't think I have ever tried black pudding, but I will give it a go, and definitely never tried haggis! see you on the morrow! ha ha thanks again nell

Hi, FLYSCO, thanks for reading it, I will definitely be trying the black pudding, you never know, I might just get addicted to it! thanks so much nell

Hi, sheila, have I made you hungry now? lol nice to see you, cheers nell

Hi, Hello, it certainly does! but it also makes me not want to eat for the rest of the day! thanks again nell

Hi, SilentReed, I never knew that, I will definitely be drinking more tea with it now! thanks nell

Hi, Sa'ge, so you like bubble and sqeak? I never knew we had influenced your food! ha ha what about fish and chips? I love the pidgin English it's great, thanks as always nell

Hi, Merlin, I know what you mean! If I do eat breakfast it has to be bacon and eggs, otherwise I go without and just have tea! cheers nell

Hi, Polly, I must admit I have never tried that, I will certainly be giving it a go now! thanks for that, nice to see you, cheers nell

Hi, CMHypno, I am the same! I virtually nuke it before eating it! lol my family think I am mad, but it has to be really crispy, thanks nell

Amazing! My dad lived in England and tries to recreate this for us.

AliciaC 19 months ago

I grew up in Britain but I live in Canada now. Your hub reminded me of the delicious breakfasts I had when I was a child. We often ate bacon and eggs with fried tomatoes and fried bread. I also loved black pudding, although when I was a child I didn’t know what it was made of! We ate a lot of bubble and squeak too. Thanks for the memories!

carolina muscle 19 months ago

I don't know who said it, but a famous Englishman said: that "Breakfast three times a day is the only way to eat well in England". Haha.. I dunno about that, but the English certainly have breakfast down to a science!!!

Rose West 19 months ago

Nell, I enjoyed reading about the English breakfast - I'd never heard of fried bread, but it sounds great :) I have heard of black pudding, however, and I can't understand why people eat that! Anyway, you've made me hungry, so I have to go find something to eat now...

D.A.L. 19 months ago

Hi, Nell a full English and you can take on the world. Don't go on my rambles until I have had one. Then I find a cafe that does an all day English breakfast. It gets cold up here in the north!-need to keep the cold out. Thanks great hub

mysterylady 89 19 months ago

Nell, you made me hungry! Like you, I prefer breakfast later in the day. When I spent the summer in England, I finally learned to drink tea with milk and sugar.

Have you ever eaten "egg in the hole"?

ehern33 19 months ago

Nell, you are a bad girl doing this to me. Over here it is just an OLD Country Breakfast, but I like a bowl of grits, with plenty of butter to go with it. That lasts me at least until dinner. One other thing, I like three eggs with mine and pancakes. OH, I almost forgot the most important part of this late breakfast.

A NICE LONG NAP AFTERWARD!!!

DoorMattnomore 19 months ago

lemon marmalade? ooohhhhhh...will have to try it!! I make this kind of breakfast every weekend and had no idea it was a full English Breakfast. We often have it for dinner too. I like my eggs cooked in the bacon fat. I've recently discovered something new I love..(I think maybe a bit like bubble and squeak?), its red flannel hash. A boiled dinner all fried up together the next day. Cabbage, carrots, ham, potoates and beets. YUM

Awesome hub and now I am starving!!

Oh, and @mysterylady...egg in a hole is great. My kids love it. I like to use a heart shaped cookie cutter for the hole.

akirchner 19 months ago

Looks yummy - even if it is afternoon, it's making me wish for breakfast!

Nell,

There are mornings that I dream of full english... Very evocative. Sadly, bacon in the US is not to my liking, and my wife doesn't understand the concept of frying a tomato. I learned to really love black pudding from living in Newcastle. Feeling seriously homesick right now!

I cook a great breakfast, so stop on by and i will get one for you! ha ha thanks again nell

Hi, MysterLady, no I have never heard of it! but we do have toad in the hole! ha ha no, it's not made from toads! it is sausage in sponge like batter, you put the sausage in the mix and put it in the oven! Yum! thanks so much nell

Hi, ehern, nice to see you, can you answer me a question? What the hell are grits? ha ha I have heard of it but have no idea what it is?

Here is the dictionary version: A ground, usually white meal of dried and hulled corn kernels that is boiled and served as a breakfast food or side dish.

2. Coarsely ground grain, especially corn.

I boil it in milk and make it as creamy as possble. Sometimes add bits of real bacon and butter, other times bacon and cheese.

Ok, now for my description of grits, YUMMY!!

mysterylady 89 19 months ago

I'll bet you would love "egg in the hole." Cut a square of about an inch out of a piece of bread. Put butter into a skillet as well as the piece of bread and the aquare. When they are toasted on one side, turn them over. Crack open an egg into the hole and cook.

Nell Rose 19 months ago

Hi, mysteryLady, Oh is that what it is? that sounds yummy! I will definitely try it, thanks so much nell

Yummy. This is a great Hub but I'm salivating like Pavlov's dog and need to run. After this, more people will understand how truly deficient, a "continental breakfast" really is.

Nell Rose 19 months ago

Hi, sligobay, ha ha I love that saying! it's a bit late to eat a Full English now, but maybe not? thanks so much nell

DzyMsLizzy 19 months ago

Ohh.. I love bubble and squeak! I'm more of a vegetarian, so the meat stuff is unappealing to me...and bubble and squeak I pefer not earlier than lunch. I like sweets for breakfast..such as Danish pastries or toast and jam. ;-)

Thanks for an interesting read!

eventsyoudesign 19 months ago

Actually researchers found that a full English breakfast is good for you. They say it is better to eat all of your fatty foods in the morning and you will be more full and eat less through out the day. I am vegetarian so I am not so sure about eating bangers and blood pudding. Yuck! But, I do enjoy a big breakfast. Teresa

Hi, Jenny, ha ha I knew I would get someone over here because they were hungry! hee hee thanks nell

Hi, Martie, I always eat in the evening unless I manage a bit of toast in the morning, I just ate a bacon sandwich! can't stop now! ha ha cheers nell

I can't believe it. Tea bags!! Are you sure your are truly English. Did your mother find you on the doorstep?

Good hub. Thanks. I've been to England, however I missed out on the Full English Breakfast some how. Didn't have a cuppa either. Maybe it wasn't really England. I flew in by Ryan. Do you suppose those Irishers misrouted us?

Springboard 19 months ago

As if I wasn't already feeling the pangs of hunger enough already, you go and do this to me. :) Although, for me, an omelette is probaby my favorite way to eat eggs—though I've been hard pressed to master the art of actually making one. My own omelettes look almost like scrambled eggs, but have the texture and taste of an omelette. :)

PDXBuys 19 months ago

I remember, back in 1988, when my young English girlfriend first cooked me breakfast with fried tomatoes. It was wonderful. I really miss her tomatoes.

Nell Rose 19 months ago

Hi, david, ha ha you spotted that about the tea bags! I am lazy I could use proper tea but I make such a mess! You should have had a good old English breakfast but maybe you are right, you probably took a wrong turn and ended up in Ireland! hee hee thanks so much nell

Hi, Springboard, I learnt a lovely little tip for cooking an omelette. When you have put it in the pan and cooked the bottom, instead of turning it over, stick it under the grill! that's what the top chefs do, so it doesn't break! crafty eh? lol thanks again nell

Hi, PDX, it isn't a breakfast without tomatoes especially fried ones, but I love the way you say you miss the tomatoes but not her! ha ha thanks nell

This is a mouth-watering description of bacon and eggs! Neither of us eats a breakfast like this - although Pat eats more that Tricia in the morning. But your Hub makes such a convincing case that maybe the next time we have a self-catering holiday we might treat ourselves and the Wonderful Husbands. ym.

Wonderful hub, Nell. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Your recipes sound wonderful and I will order up the Full English Breakfast now, please. I used to go to an English pub on Friday Harbor out in the San Juan Islands (Pacific Northwest) and get their Bubbles and Squeak. It was so good! It had sausage, bacon, potatoes, onions, cabbage, cheese and scrambled eggs. Mmmm. I also love Bangers and Mash (my own version). Do you have a recipe for original English Bangers and Mash?

Nell Rose 19 months ago

Hi, simOn, that's funny isn't it? I think we all are just getting hungry doing this! lol thanks so much nell

Nell, I make breakfast for my family on the weekends Saturday and Sunday. Saturday isnt as big as Sundays meal. Saturday is like pancakes and some meat, but Sunday I get out of bed most times before everyone start mmm the coffee, love the smell of coffee brewing in the morning, then I start our breakfast. Most time we have eggs, fried potatoes, toast, sausage, ham, or bacon, fruit or yogurt, and some orange juice for my kids. I also have to throw on some french toast or pancakes for my oldest son he thinks eggs smell like a fart and will not eat them. Then I clean up the mess with my kids, yes my kids help me and I make a big Sunday dinner and let it cook all day and make a big salad and bread or rolls with it. MMM I love Sunday cooking just not Sunday laundry hehehe.

I spent some time in England and your hub reminded me of the traditional breakfast I had there.

Regrettably The good old fashioned English Breakfast is becoming a thing of the past in this new "speed orientated" Generation, its up to us older ones to keep up and try and revitalize it. It can only be beaten by one meal. Check out my hub, Favorite Meal of the Day, you may agree.

I just had an english breakfast today! However, the bacon wasn't crisp at all. Over the years, the standard seems to have dropped and i don't think it's rocket science to cook some crispy bacons!

Hi, rafken, thanks for reading, I'll be right over! lol

Hi, my14u, I know just what you mean! have to do it myself! lol thanks

Wanting to get the true English Experience, my first two mornings at a B&B in London...actually West Hampton...I tucked into the FEB (but no beans...???), on the silly notion that I'd need all that fuel for a day of sightseeing. Well, I'm not a breakfaster at home, so on the third morning I asked the bacon be withheld. Mainly because I wanted to leave room for whichever of London's cafes and tearooms I came across that one absolutely MUST try while playing tourist. Also there were those lovely pocket parks where one can enjoy a sandwich from Pret a Manger and a bottle of their lemonade. ;D

Hi, Jama, I am not one for breakfast usually, funnily enough only on holiday! but I eat this in the evening instead! I prefer to eat out, and grab a sandwich too, even while on holiday I very rarely eat a meal, just nibble on snacks! lol

There is something better than a full English and that is...a full Irish breakfast! LOL

I love my fry ups and have one at least twice a week. "It puts hairs on your chest." My grandfather used to say and I am one hairy guy!

I am feeling peckish after that but it is 9pm so I will have to wait till morning if I can last!

Nell Rose 11 months ago

Hi, Spirit, I eat this breakfast at night as well! lol maybe not after nine though, thanks for reading, cheers nell
