Do Ghosts And Spirits Really Exist Or Is There Something Else Out There?
82Things That Go Bump In The Night
I have recently got to thinking about why we believe in ghosts. After watching so many TV programs about haunted houses, old pubs and of the course the obviously haunted sewers, I seriously wondered if these ghosts were actually quite mad! If you think about it, why on earth would ghosts stay around an old sewer, or even the house they used to live in?
I mean surely, if there really is something out there called Heaven or even Hell, wouldn't they want to go and explore? Yes, to a certain degree I understand them wanting to stay in the same house that they had been born in, it must be quite fascinating to see all the mod cons and the new owners. But surely after a while you would get bored. This is of course if the ghost had any residual sensel left over, after leaving this earthly coil.
But to stay in the sewers? Apart from a few rats and mice, and of course all the nasty floating objects shooting past them, what else is there for them to do? And why do all the ghost hunters have to do everything in the dark? Why don't they at least light a candle. So what is the reason why we believe in ghosts?
Simple Explanation.
Over the centuries, myths and legends have always told of ghostly maidens walking through graveyards in the dead of night, or eerie wailing has been heard in the woods nearby. As science has progressed and we along with it, surely we must know that nearly all of the so called ghost sightings have a simple explanation. For example, noises in the woods we now know are usually a sign of owls or other creatures going about their business. Sightings are usually just shadows or Will o' the Wisp which as we now know is glowing methane or gas clouds coming up from the ground, caused by organic decay.
Sounds in the house can be explained by the walls and furniture expanding and contracting in the heat. And of course the so called cold spots that usually appear in a house are just that, a draught under the door.
But what about the people who actually see ghosts?
Usually whenever a person appears on TV talking about their encounter with a ghost, they usually come out with the same story. They were walking up the stairs, and all of a sudden they saw a ‘ghostly form’ walk past them. The trouble is by the time the person gets interviewed, their mind has decided to add lovely little titbit's such as, ‘and they were wearing a crinoline dress!’ why is that? I don’t personally think they are making it up, I believe that by the time they have thought about it, talked to friends and got themselves into a frenzy about being interviewed, their brain has made the whole thing up into a great big adventure. And that, I think, is the problem.
Fight And Flight
Our minds are as deep and unknown as the depths of the Ocean, and the expanse of Space. There is only so much we know about how our brains work. Take for example the fact that someone does actually see something. In this scenario, a girl is walking through an empty house. It is cold and dark, the lights outside have gone out and she fumbles around for the light switch to see where she is going.
What’s happening to her body? To start with her adrenaline is fine, but as she begins to get uncomfortable with the situation, her body goes into the fight and flight mode. Her breathing becomes erratic, and before you know it, she sees or hears a ghost. There can be two explanations for this, apart from imagination. One, the animal instinct in her makes her vision much more clear, she sees things that she wouldn't normally take in. Floating dust mites, shadows from the trees outside and so on. And the second is, maybe her brain is trying desperately to figure out what it is she is seeing. Her mind tries to make shapes out of the darkness and comes up with the one explanation that is deeply implanted into her subconscious mind. A ghost.
Ley Lines or Magnetic Force
There of course is another explanation. The Earth does emanate a certain amount of magnetic force, and people who believe in the Spiritual Science of the Earth think that these lines effect our minds. Ley Lines were even studied to see if they did produce some sort of Psychic energy. Of course ley lines may just be a myth.
They were discovered by Alfred Watkins back in 1921, who, when riding out across the hills of Bredwardine Hertfordshire England, suddenly noticed that most of the paths and roads seemed to meet at certain points. Castles, Churches and other Sacred sites all seemed to line up. Looking more closely, he discovered that they had been used for Centuries even before the building of the said Castles etc. His studies indicated that ancient man must somehow have known about these Psychic pathways and built on them accordingly. This has been debunked by Scientists, who state that the lines in question do not even exist. But the one thing we do know is that certain magnetic forces can affect peoples memory as shown recently on the Science lectures on TV.
Subliminal Suggestion
Certain stimuli to our brains can affect our cognitive thinking. By coincidence after watching another science program that talked about this, my friend phoned me and said that the night before, she had seen a ghost. Now she is not prone to imagination, she is a hardened Scottish lass who doesn't believe or take notice of any nonsense. So as you can imagine I was very surprised. What she told me corresponded to what I had seen on the Program.
It was late at night and she was standing in her living room sorting out boxes of papers for work. The room was quiet and she was completely alone. All of a sudden, out of the corner of her eye, she suddenly saw a figure standing in the doorway. She jumped and dropped the box. She was totally convinced that she had seen someone. She thought it was a man. Her husband was upstairs in bed at the time and couldn’t have been him.
When I asked her if she could hear any cars outside, she looked at me in complete amazement. Yes, she said, there were a few driving past. So I told her what I had heard on the program. Evidently the sound of the cars whoomping over the speed bumps, and the quiet darkness of the room, actually affects your mind. In other words, her ghost was imagination caused by the stimuli.
It was the perfect scenario for subliminal suggestion.
Time Slips and Other Scenario's
So, we have all the mind scenarios explained. What about the real ghost sightings? These are the ones that cannot be explained by fright, subliminal suggestions and magnetic forces affecting our brain patterns.
The one thing that I have noticed in all of the ghostly wanderings that people report, is the fact that ghost A will always appear at a certain time of the night, and walk across the road to house B.
In other words the ghost is doing the same thing night after night. What does that tell you?
1. Ghost A and house B are in a time loop. In other words it really is a ghost but on the Other Plane where it lives, it either has no memory and has to keep walking over to House B, or time has gone forward in that Other Plane but we only see the loop.
2. The Ghost is in fact a 'Memory' of that person. In other words, we all know that we have an Aura. Scientific explanation is that we all emanate electricity around us. Same thing. Maybe in certain conditions we can see the outline of the Aura, which would explain the continuous loop going round and round.
3. Another Dimension. Maybe we see in certain circumstances another World that is overlapping our own. This would explain ghosts that don’t stay in the same place and in fact walk around the house at different times of the day and night, doing totally different things each time.
4. A Time Slip. This is the one that I actually believe in. Time is a man made concept to a certain extent. Obviously time does happen, Planets are born, Planets die etc. But maybe time loops back on itself sometimes, as Einstein believed. It would also explain precognition and premonition, in other words seeing into the future.
There has been a study by physicists who deal with quantum physics, stating that maybe what we see as time is not linear. In other words it doesn’t go from A to B across the Centuries, but it has all happened at once, and sometimes our minds ‘lift’ above our consciousness, rather like sitting in a Helicopter looking down, and ‘see’ the past or the future. As I stated in my article Time Travel Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain The Ghost of Versailles
And of course the last explanation is a Ghost. Simple as that. Maybe Marie Antoinette is still haunting Versailles. Anne Boleyn is still looking for her head in the Tower of London. And of course Great Grandma Jones is still walking around your bedroom looking for her false teeth!
You decide.

Hi Nell. Thanks for a great Hub. I believe (as do many) that ghosts (or spirits) stay in a house, or even sewer, because there is something holding them to that place... something that they were meant to do while here in a physical body but did not get to do before the passed over.
Some are still here waiting for somebody else to do something that they have to, in order to free the spirit from this plane.

Very informative and interesting and well written! Voted up, awesome, interesting and useful. I sent the link to my daughter, as I know she'll find it interesting, too. :-)
Awesome hub!
You explain a lot of parapsychology here which is undoubtedly to blame for the pehnomena in most cases. However, I have had one experience which wasn't a ghost per se but the left-over energy of someone who had previously been in that location. I'll explain:
Somebody had been in my house without my knowledge and had just left literally seconds before I arrived home. As I walked into the room I could feel a sense panic and rushing in the atmosphere. There was no-one there and it was dead silent but I could just feel this presence there with me. I then later found out it was a guy that my fiancee had been having an affair with. It was as though his energy was still there lingering behind him in the room.
People have suggested before that ghosts could be some kind of left-over energy from people that lived in the past. My father and sister both claim that they saw a very real apparition in our town in the middle of the day, they were together at the time. The only other experience I have witnessed is someone who looked incredibly like an extraterrestrial being walking in the middle of our town in the middle of the day.
Voted up and awesome!
Hi Nell Rose,
My husband and I had an experience years ago when walking in an 18th century village which had not been restored. It still had all the old furniture in it. He felt somebody touching his back and shoulders as he went up a flight of stairs. He thought it was me, and commented. I let him know it wasn't me, I was still looking around on the first floor! He swears until today it was a ghost, and he's a sensible sort of person. I think the time planes are happening at the same time too. Nice to see you.
I haven't had an experience before - and honestly hope I never do - but I did enjoy reading your hub :)
I used to live in a haunted house. Believe me the things I heard and saw in that house were not my imagination. Many of the things that happened that house happened in the day time. Plus we weren't told of anything happening in that house so we weren't predisposed to think of ghosts.
I have thought for years that maybe all time happens at once and that could explain some sightings.
Maybe those ghosts in the sewers are there because that is where they died.
Nice Hub from a non-believer - lol
Nell I almost didn't comment on this one. As you maybe know I've experienced several unexplained events in life, the fight or flight response is no stranger here; and after many years the time came to finally write on them. Certainly the things you wrote about in the first half of your well written hub do happen. My research, however, says there are Ley lines or an Earth grid if one prefers that. As an intelligent person you see both sides of the paranormal question which is of course a wise way to approach it. Tack Ms. Nell. I'll finish up by saying dimensions and time slips are highly recommended areas to study for anyone starting out on the subject.:)
In Indonesia we believe that there are many kinds of invisible being. First they are called iblis or satan. They are made of fire. Then there are jinn, also created from fire. The jinn look very scary. Then angels are created from light. They live in different world but some people can see and talk to them. We believe that the souls of deceased human being live in another world so we cannot communicate with them.
It is demonic activity, or fraternity pranks. What's the difference?
Very good, thought provoking hub. As someone who believes in this phenomenon, I like exploring all sides of the argument. I have my own hypothesis after much research. I follow the 2nd law of thermodynamics that engergy can not be created or destroyed.. only transferred. There is very little man knows about this energy. But, you presented many great ideas here. I love the paranormal debate and I hope you read my paranormal interviews with Barry Fitzgerald of GHI. He has many fascinating suggestions from his years of being in the field. I love your work!
Hi Nell,
I personally believe that all ghosts are demons. And a lot of people believe that they hide, waiting for you to come along and scare the crap out of you. Which I also believe.
True story, my childhood home had a demon in it. It would torment me 'cause I knew it was there. It would poke me in the back, move my things around, and do crazy things like turn my lights on and off, and open and close doors. When I got about seventeen, I started learning about demons and what they do to people. I also learned that I could have the house blessed and command them to leave. So, I got a preacher to bless the house. After that, no more issues. Never had an incident or problem again. Ironically, when my dad sold the house later on, a preacher bought it.
I can see everything you have said regarding debunking ghosts but I do think there is some sort of spiritual presence on earth. Maybe it's angels. What do you think about angels?
I have a private writing that I am working on.. just a bunch of personal notes really... at the moment its 18 or 19 pages of Word document that I keep recording my experiences on, along with everything I can remember or that was observed and or talked about by the other witnesses to the events etc.
So far it is dealing specifically with the Demonic aspects of the Paranormal... (possessions, oppression's, manipulations)
While I do believe that Ghosts exist... I do NOT believe they are the departed souls of dead people...
But your article is about other ideas on the Ghost side of things and I do agree with much of what you have written in this Hub.. there are many things we need to consider... But concerning Ghosts and just ghosts... Ones that are NOT actually Demonic entities.. and I think there may be many different types of situations that fall into a catch all of "Ghost" so.. If it is Ghost and not demon.. then I think we may also have a possibility of a Person being asleep and dreaming something... Maybe Remembering something... The Person doing the dreaming may not be in our own timeline even... or even in our Dimension line... But since they are in the midst of sleep and in the middle of a dream.. they might become visible (their dream avatar would be anyway) and then we see them... as an ethereal looking being doing something strange etc. Just an idea... been mulling it over lately.. I have had some strange dreams from time to time... sometimes as though I am looking through another persons eyes and seeing events that are not in this place or things, places etc that would not be normal for my mind to imagine... Food for thoughts anyway... I think that the 80+ Percent of our minds that we are not normally using on a conscious level.. may be working overtime at thing we have no clue about.. especially when we go to sleep and it takes over.
Interesting, but I don't agree with the concept of "it's all in your head."
My husband and I have personal experience in the matter; a friend of ours is also a professional paranormal investigator and has checked out our home.
I started to explain more, but it's too much for a comment. Look for a hub of mine on the matter in the near future from today (1-9-12).
Voted up and interesting.
My opinion is that there are as great an amount of beings in other realms as there are in this one, and probably as much bio diversity too. That is why I feel that we will never understand exactly what ghosts are. At least we won't in this life.
Thanks for a very interesting article Nell. One of your best.
Nice read. Liked the last paragraph about time not being linier.
Nell Rose....intriguing, to say the least. My only comment is, there is no limit whatsoever to the power & complexities of the human MIND (conscious, subconscious & UNconscious) it is capable of ALL things....seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, imagining, blocking, creating, altering....on and on and on. I believe you understand my gist. Up & AWESOME
I like how you argue both sides of the topic. I don't know what ghosts are. I do think they exists though most reports of them are false. The time loop/aura scenario is fascinating to me. It makes sense in a way. Energy leaves a trail and energy trapped in a loop would do the same. You have done a great job here! It’s too cool how you have applied current science to such an old topic that to me has to be founded in some truth or it would have died down long ago. God bless!
Lert me tell you straight. There may be ghosts. Humans are more dangerous,
What an interesting hub, I believe ghosts exist although it's hard to describe their world and existence.
I think that you are right in always looking for the rational explanation first. Most of the time, paranormal experiences can be explained by tricks of the mind. And those TV ghosthunt programmes are for entertainment purposes only, and should be taken with a large pinch of salt. And a lot of ghosts are seen at night, due to sleep paralysis. However, most people have either had a paranormal experience or know someone who has. They are usually spontaneous and can't be recreated at will.
I have seen a ghost of the elderly woman who lived in my home before me, but I am still undecided if it was a real experience. I tend to believe it was as a result of sleep paralysis, although the clothes I saw her wearing were recognised by neighbours who knew her. So, I am 50/50 as to whether I believe my own eyes.
Your hub has inspired me to write one about my own experiences.
Ghosts do exist, and they help celebrities write books!
Hi Nell Rose,
Great hub...I don't know if I believe in these things, but I do have respect for people that do.... So many unexplained things in our world, we just don't know?...

Hey! I love this article! For a long time I had been obssessed with the Ghost Hunters show-not because I believe, but on the contrary, I am a skeptic. I believe to some degree but this article gives me a new perspective. I especially love the bit about the cars passing by at night. Very interesting.
Wonderful Hub on Ghosts Nell...Really gives us food for thought. I guess I can't think that one day, I will not be here...Gone...but for how long? I think I really want to Explore the Heavens, when my time comes, not Haunt anyone...Well, maybe for FUN on Halloween! Really Enjoyed this Hub Nell.
People who think ghosts exist: Just think until you find out they don't. (There's something called science to explain things..)
There is a normal down to earth explanation for everything, and I mean everything...
People believe in ghosts because they don't know enough about physics and the brain to come up with realistic explanations. They don't know enough about all the logic behind everything that happens in the universe, they think of the easiest explanation available: "it was paranormal."
If someone farts and you don't know what a fart is, you could think it was a grated steam train salad that a rock just had for lunch, and the rock was on jupiter 200 years ago, but a ghost carried it to earth and made paranormal things happen, or you could find out sound exists and that sound is a more logical explanation for fart noises.
People don't know about science so they make up their own explanations, which are usually wrong aka paranormal.
When I see the word "paranormal" I read "something you can't explain, because you don't have enough knowledge".
Wow! Very interesting and quite possible theories, Nell. I truly enjoyed reading this one, for as you know, I am BIG into the paranormal world. I definitely believe in time slips...because as you said time is sort of a man-made thing. Very good points you brought up here. And I also agree with the energy of many people being left behind...but what about the more violent spirits? The things that people call demons? Do you believe in such things?
Voted up and interesting.
Voted up, useful, and interesting Nell. Hope you have been doing well my friend. Great informative article. I believe the question if ghost exist weighs on a lot of us, especially after death or our own experiences. I didn't believe, then I had an encounter. I do believe, 110% in. Does it prove there is a Heaven and Hell? Probably. We are taught to not believe this in society, but taught to believe in it through the Bible. With technology capabilities, we can experiment through ghost. I always watch Ghost Adventures personally. A great show if you haven't seen it. I like how you presented all these theories Nell. This is a great, well researched article. Very well done.
I am a believer of ghosts. There has been several things happen in my house. The most recent was just a couple nights ago. I was already in bed as well as my kids. My husband came into the bedroom. He was about to lay down when we both heard the door knob jiggle. He opened the door and looked to see if it was my oldest son. No one in the hallway than he walked in his room to find him sound asleep.
I've just remembered another experience I had which I didn't think about last time I commented.
My fiancee had gone away for 5 days and I was up at about 4am on the computer. Suddenly all the kids toys that were piled up in the corner flew across the room, literally they ended up about 7 or 8 feet across the room. It made me jump.
I still have no explanation for it.
In the end, after those long and complete explanation, your closing turn back to the question: do ghosts really exist?
I do not believe ghost exist. But just like BBudoyono said, there are several being beside human existed in this Earth, called Djinn or Genie, it is I believe similar with what ryokowaren said as Demon, is the true form of ghosts.
Actually Djinn live in another realm but sometimes we stumble into each other or in another time they playing with our mind by showing themselves to human in the form human afraid the most. But different with Mr. BBudoyono believe, I do not believe spirit of deceased person will roaming around the earth and communicate with the living. More likely it is Djinn which took the form of the death and act like one to playing around with human mind. For what purpose? Some said to seduce human to believe other than what the book of God had taught. Other said it was only to have some fun. Maybe we should ask them if one appear in front of us later. :p
Great Hub, Nell. Vote up!
I've been a ghost hunter for 2 years, and from my experience, I found that 99% of ghost sightings are something else (natural phenomena or over-active imagination). I have yet to find that elusive 1%, but I believe it's out there...somewhere. I'll keep hunting until I find it. Great hub!
As an avid follower of Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Celebrity Ghost Stories, etc. I am on the quest for the answer myself. I know people personally who have seen the ghost of their dearly departed, but I have not. I have seen something, but I believe most people would say I saw angels in my son's hospital room when he was being treated for leukemia. They were ten-feet tall, transparent, white, glowing, and standing soldier-like beside his bed. This was before I had ever heard of the 10-foot angels written about by Sophie Burnam. I enjoy your hubs.
@M4rv1n of course it is science, everything is science. We are science, so why not ghosts? I believe everything is connected.
I agree with hecate-horus in the fact that a lot of ghost sightings are just imagination or weird circumstances. But I also believe that anything can and does happen.
not sure why god would allow ghosts to wander around scaring people :P spiritism is suprisingly modern i think after WW1 people wanted to connect with their loved ones again and thats how it happened...funny how in such a modern age these things still thrive.
Excellent article again. Whether some ghosts are 'recordings' etched into the stones of buildings or others are actual earthbound spirits not ready to leave, I do believe both are real. I just know too many credible/professional people who have experienced seeing ghosts. I suspect one day science will explain how this happens and is possible, but in the meantime I 100% believe they do exist, but that the scientific world cannot yet explain how it is possible.
You share my curiosity Nell :)
Great hub, Nell! Since you look at it from...forgive the unintentional pun...both sides, and comments are pretty evenly yea and nay, I can't resist tossing in my own take on "Do they or don't they?". Which is, imagine the responses to a similar discussion 100 or 200 years ago had the topic been "Can humans communicate instantly with other humans on the other side of the world?".
Naysayers would've said "No way!" and believers would've said "Of course!" (meaning telepathically). But now we CAN do just that via something called the internet and/or a tiny device called a cell phone.
My point being, I believe "Do ghosts exist?" will be a moot question 100 or 200 years from now. We just don't have the technology yet to prove they DO exist to those who don't believe they do.
I've lost count of the encounters I've had with the dimension known as the Other Side. None were my imagination or an adrenaline surge, or any of the other "explanations" you list in the interest of addressing both sides of the discussion.
Voted up and awesome! ;D
Exellent hub, Nell. I always enjoy the things you choose to write about. I had an experience with a ghost or at least a playful spirit. It was strage, not scary. A psychic friend told me that it was a "poltergeist "effect." She said when we are tense and under great stress, things manifest themselves in our environment that represent that stress. Thought it was an interesting idea.
thanks for great hub and voted up
marsie
I think what it all boils down to is we don't yet know how much we DON'T know about phenomena like poltergeists or the energy left behind by the dead at sites where they died under traumatic circumstances (like a Civil War battle or a field hospital), or at places that held special meaning for them in life.
Ghosts or no ghosts we have nothing to fear when we have Christ in us. As I can see, you are more of a science believer than of what may be beyond our mind, Nell? No one can blame you for it is in your mind set.
But do you believe that greater things are revealed to you when you try to understand things with your heart and your spirit? Yes, Nell, we have a spirit in us, as we have all been created with a spirit, now in body form in trial and to realize that we all have a mission in this life, to live in God's love for others as we may humble ourselves to God, our Creator. When our body dies, our spirit lives, but amazingly, we have another body, that lives with our spirit by then, and many NDE's or near death experiences have similar accounts, even as they left their human body temporarily in their plight, usually into a bright light, with a few blessed seeing Jesus and their deceased friends or relatives.
In Matthew 10:28, Jesus tells us, "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul, but rather fear Him (God) who is able to destroy both body and soul (spirit) in hell."
Thank you for sharing your talents in this very interesting hub, Nell. Godspeed as we KJOH.
The Bible says this: Psalms 115:17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
Psalms 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish
Ecclesiastes 9:5,6 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
I submit that the spirits people are experiencing are either angels, which do exist or the devil's spirits, which, unfortunately also exist.
Oh no, Nell! That's not what the Bible says! It says no one who is dead knows anything - that's true. But it also says that those in Christ, meaning those who put their faith in Jesus, will be resurrected when he returns. We have a life after death if we are in Christ. When we die, we just sort of go to sleep until Jesus comes back and takes us all up with Him. The ones who have to worry are the ones who are not saved - the ones who haven't accepted Jesus as their savior. That's what the gospel is all about. I just meant that the Bible says the dead do not communicate with the living.
Hi Nell. Another superb hub, I like your style. I agree that the mind is very poweful and can easily trick you into seeing or feeling things that aren´t real. Imagination can easily get the better of you. It´s good to question but there are unexplainable phenomena happening all the time as you know.

Okay, so you have no profoundly explained a lot of ghost stories. Truth is I had an encounter with a ghost and my family with me and it was NOT cool! It was scary as hell! I am a Christian and I don't know what a ghost is but they do exist.
