Hangover Cures And The Dangers Of Alcohol Poisoning What To Do In An Emergency
93The Hangover
A hangover is not a very pleasant feeling. You wake up the day after a really hard drinking session and bang, there goes your head! Its not like a normal headache which can consist of a pain over one eye, like a migraine, or a full headache that makes you want to go back to sleep.
No, a hangover headache is so much more than that. Lots more in fact!
For a start, you probably didn't get a lot of sleep because the room has been spinning for most of the night, and you are scared that if you do fall asleep, the woozy feeling that makes you feel as though you are about to plunge of a cliff head first, is going to make you throw up.
But you managed to get through the night. Now what?
Those first few minutes from the second you open your eyes, or should I say one eye at a time, to the second your feet touch the floor, you just know its going to be hell for the next few hours. So what to do?
Why Do We Get A Hangover?
- Alcohol has a drying effect on your brain caused by the chemical ethanol.
- If you take too much alcohol, your liver which usually breaks down the chemical by using enzymes, will not be able to cope with so much going through your system. The by-product of this cleansing process is the fact that while your liver is trying to keep up with the continued flush through of ethanol, it cannot do its usual job of supplying glucose to your brain and body tissues.
- The result is that the energy that is usually supplied to the brain is not reaching it, and the weakness that you feel, along with fatigue is the price you pay for slugging down too many cocktails! But of course its not just spirits that can cause this trouble. Beer, if continuously drunk throughout the evening can have the same effect too. People sometimes think that beer is safer but this isn't necessarily true.
Congeners
Also another reason why you are suffering so badly is because of the actual drink that you have consumed. There is something called Congeners that are the by-products of fermentation. If you have a drink that contains this ingredient or chemical then you will suffer more. The worse culprits are Brandy, Whisky and other darker spirits. White Wine compared to Red Wine is much less likely to contain this chemical. Which is strange because I can drink Red Wine, but feel terrible with White!

Cures For Your Hangover
First of all one of the best ways to avoid a hangover if you are planning on drinking is to make sure you alternate your alcohol with water or something fizzy such as Coca Cola. This will give your liver a chance to produce glucose and keep your body balanced.
If you forget to do the alternate water drinking session, make sure that when you get home you drink at least two glasses of water. This will not only flush out the toxins caused by the alcohol but will hydrate your body too. Watering down the alcohol has got to be good. Simple as that.
When you stagger in the door and head for the sink or fridge to get some water, take time out to find a Vitamin C tablet. Preferably drink a Vitamin C drink. The reason being that Vit C speeds up the metabolism and clears the alcohol from your liver.
On waking up make sure that you eat something. We all know the joke about bacon and eggs, but eating a bit of toast, drinking tea with lots of sugar, and of course orange juice should start making you feel a bit better. On the subject of eggs, they actually do have a chemical reason for eating them on top of a hangover. Evidently they contain a cleaning up chemical that helps the liver to recover. Good little egg!
If you are going to take a pain killer make sure that you drink lots of water with it. You don’t want dizzy on top of your icky! Your body is trying to clean out the alcohol and the toxins, numbing them at the same time is probably a good idea for your head, but can cause you to feel sicker because of the chemical reaction. Try and hold on for at least an hour after eating. Trust me, these ideas are tried and well trusted!
Stand outside, and take deep breaths of cleansing fresh air. There is nothing better than oxygenating your body. This will speed up the process of cleansing, wake your brain up a bit, and make you feel slightly more human!
Eat a ginger biscuit/cookie. Or even better, chew on a piece of ginger. This is a great natural body balancer. In fact I always use it if I am going out on a boat, or flying. It really does settle your stomach. And as we know, if our bellies feel better, then the headache tends to go off quicker.
Tomato juice is probably one of the best hangover drinks that I have used. Every time I went to the pub the next day, the first thing I would do is down a tomato juice. It lines your stomach and makes you feel human again. Some people will tell you to have a ‘hair of the dog’ in other words add some more alcohol to the drink. Seriously guys, it just makes you want to carry on drinking in case you start getting another hangover! If that’s what you feel is right for you, then fine, but its not the alcohol that’s making you feel better, its actually the tomato juice!
Any stomach tablets such as Alka Seltzer which is nice and fizzy should take away that horrible sicky feeling. But don’t take too much it will just make you worse. The best idea is to just keep nibbling on toast. If you don’t like the idea of plain toast, add some fish. Yes, I know, yuck! But fish is good in Vitamin A and is a great anti oxidant.
The Dangers Of Too Much Alcohol
The one thing that you have to remember, and this is very important, is that drinking too much alcohol kills you! Alcohol poisoning is deadly unless treated in hospital. I know that may sound obvious, but hear me out. If you ever find someone crashed out because of too much alcohol, always check their breathing and vital signs. If in doubt, call an ambulance. Never ever leave them alone. If you are a long way from a town or hospital, try and make them sick.
Charcoal.
Then, if possible get them to swallow charcoal tablets. These can be bought from any chemist or pharmacy. I did this a few years ago for someone who was staying with us. He stupidly drank too much, so I threw as many charcoal tablets I could find, down his throat. The Paramedic commended me on that. He said I did the right thing. It's what they use in hospital to clear the alcohol or drugs out of the body. Evidently, it soaks up the poisons. Its also good for an overdose of aspirin and paracetamol too. Charcoal is also good for normal tummy upsets, so its good to keep them in your bathroom cabinet.
Reasons why drinking too much is dangerous.
The main reason is that, if you have too much alcohol in your body it will overtake the amount of water in your system. When this happens, the alcohol will slow down and shut off your nervous system, causing complete failure of your heart, respiratory and circulatory functions. In other words, your body will not be able to work properly. This has happened to lots of people over the years. Take care with the amount you drink. Its vitally important. Your health is more important than getting sloshed just for the fun of it.
And of course another reason not to drink too much, is that if you fall asleep after a heavy drinking session, you could very well choke on your own vomit. Not a nice thing to think about, but it happens. Try and sit up for a while after drinking. Have a coffee or tea, and if in doubt, make yourself sick. Not nice, I know, but better to bring it up before you go to sleep, than when you are deeply unconscious.
When drinking Alcohol do it safely and use common sense. It's your body, and your health. Just remember that.

Hangovers suck really bad...I have read that prickly pear juice before drinking will help you avoid a hangover completely...nice hub and happy new year drinking haha
Nell Rose...Although many years ago, I can remember the dreaded H A N G O V E R!! Oh God, YUK! WHY do humans do this to themselves? and more than ONCE, is a real mystery! Haven't touched the poison in more than 2 decades, but I sure can use these tips to pass on to a group of yet unenlightened friends! I always feel so badly for someone suffering with a hangover. It's tough to resist the urge to ask, "Now, really, was it worth it??!!" lol......Charcoal is great stuff for "cleansing" in general....it "neutralizes." Voted UP & useful!
Another great Hub Nell! :)
Thanks Nell with New Year coming and people celebrating it is good to remind them of things to do to help get sober again. I have never like drinking but there are people that do like to drink. I think that it makes them forget and gives them a feeling of everything being OK. Marked you up!
Excellent and timely! I have drunk myself to the point of being sick only two times in my 63 years, and that was two times too many! I have never understood why people go out bar-hopping and get themselves into this condition on a weekly basis and call it "fun." Conversations with the Tidy-Bowl-Man are NOT my idea of entertainment. It's never worth it!
Alternating with water or plain sodas, charcoal, ginger, or ginger ale (ginger beer for those across the pond), are all good, but not drinking so much in the first place is even better.
In my case, the two times that happened, my body did not even wait until the next day to make me feel like a pile of second-hand manure--it hit me that very evening.
One thing that is very important to remember is your own tolerance for booze. A smaller person will be hit harder and faster than a larger person; and people who have gotten their bodies "accustomed" to drinking a lot have built up a tolerance. If you are only an occasional drinker, don't try to 'keep up' with folks who go out partying all the time. That's how I got into trouble both times...by drinking up the refills I was served before I was really ready for seconds. Sometimes, it's better not to worry about hurting the host's feelings... ... ...
Voted up, awesome, interesting and useful.
Did you write this before or after the hangover? J/K! I take too many medicines to even chance a spiked eggnog, lol so don't guess I will be needing it, but charcoal sounds like something great to have around for sure. Maybe for an overdose of many things. Great hub, never know who it might save. Voted up. Happy New Year!
Hi Nell! What a timely article! I don't drink either, for the same reason as Polly, but its good advice to know if you are the only one NOT drinking! No one else would probably notice. I never heard about eating charcoal, in fact I never knew it was edible! I didn't really know any of this outside of water and aspirin so this is wonderful information to have before New Year's. Have a wonderful holiday and happy 2012! Erin
Thanks for that Nell. I think you have "covered all the bases" there.
Not to mention what alcohol does to your blood pressure and blood sugar levels! Very good Nell especially for this season.
Happy holidays!
Very much needed at this time of the year. Boy in my youth I suffered many of the symptoms you described. I shutter in remembrance. As I age the old body can't handle that type of "drying" of the brain, not that many brain cells left. LOL Voted up, marked useful and interesting.
Thanks for the great advice, Nell. Luckily, I've never experienced a hangover because I've never drunk much, but if someone I know has problems the information in this hub will be very useful.
I will definitely try some of the remedies you wrote about the next time I have a hang over. Voted up!
Nell, excellent advice and so timely. Voting up.
Darn Nell, where were you and this hub when I was 21? Surprisingly, you've actually got some helpful info in here i didn't know about. Done with a dash of humor in your always interminable style which makes the article a pleasure to read, despite the groggy topic.
Good, timely information ready for New Year and the excesses that go with it.....I can't wait!
What a useful hub! I personally don't get hangovers as I am careful what I drink. Being a Scot however they do say that Irn Bru ( a scots fizzy drink is a great cure - not sure if it is a myth or not though. Well done on a well written hub
What a great hub, with really useful tips! I remember the days when my hangovers were extremely mild. I could drink loads, and just get a bit of a tired feeling the following day... lol. Now I can't even drink one glass of wine without feeling rubbish, such a lightweight!
My best cure is to drink lots of water, although a veggie full English is also very welcome for those mornings after. :) Voted up, useful and awesome.
I never drink alcohol it's stop work brain
Chocolate milk to coat the stomach and wash down some ibuprofin (spelling?), followed by a v8, then tons of oj (minute maid is my favorite). Add eggs and toast and a nap, all is better. Charcoal is great to have around because, in the right amount (a lot) it makes you puke, which removes all the undigested alcohol. OJ will help eliminate the alcohol in the blood stream. One caution with charcoal: it opens up the other end as well :)
As I am sure you have heard, this is quite timely with New Year's festivities just a few days away! Your hubs are always so complete and informative but never boring! You are a fabulous writer Nell!
Excellent advice here. I've never heard of charcoal tablets and am not sure if you can get them here in Spain but I'll definitely look for them as they sound like a good thing to have in the medicine kit.
Personally, I've not had a hangover for years - I just stick to white wine in a large glass with ice and topped up with plain water rather than mixing my drinks - I get strange looks & comments from the Spanish barmen when I first order it :)
Ah, you too! Lots of my friends say the same thing as well. I didn't realise how alcohol tolerance decreases with age. Btw. I like the Irn Bru advice, it's a nice drink.
Nell Rose such scandals I read here between the lines hahahaha Have a lovely New Year with all my best wishes.
Nice to read this Hub before the New Year festivities...it makes me think. Very useful hub.
Wow, I had no idea tomato juice is a cure for hangovers. Interesting hub!
What a great hub (as usual). Sorry I'm so late in responding, but I was hung over. Ha ha. Ok that's a joke. I rarely get really dizzy drunk, but I sure know about feeling like crap after one drink too many. I love all your advice and will definitely have to look for those charcoal tablets. I always thought charcoal had carcinogens but I see it can be a life saver too. Thanks!
The first thing I usually do when I have a bad hangover is pour some emergen-c into a glass of water and down it! I don't usually drink enough to get a hangover any more though. I have a couple of drinks and before I go to bed I drink at least two large glasses of water and usually that prevents me from any hangovers the next day. Keep in mind though that I never drink hard liquor and usually stick to beer or maybe 3 glasses of wine tops. Thanks for sharing. Voted up and useful!

Nell, how timely this is with the New Year festivities coming up. I hope everyone reads and pays attention to this. Thank you too for the new knowledge. I'm showing my ignorance here, but I had never heard of Charcoal tablets. In this country, every year, many teens are lost to alcohol poisoning. Knowledge like this may very well save a few.
