How To Keep Cool On the Beach A few ideas to stop you turning into a sand blasted, bright red lobster!
90
Sand blasted and dangerous!
Now we all know that every Summer, the weather forecaster tells us not to forget our sunscreen, make sure we wear this and that, and most importantly, keep out of the hot sun. Yeah, right! We suffer through a freezing cold winter, snow up to our eyeballs, frost, rain and just about everything else being thrown at us for months on end, and then the forecast tells us to keep out of the sun? Oh please! As if we would. What do they think we are, stupid? It's the sun, for goodness sake! We want to feel WARM!
So, yes, I am going to lay out in the sun. And I am going to stay there. For hours and hours and hours until, at the end of the day, my body will be a glowing brown sun kissed Goddess, and everybody for miles around will admire me for the beauty I am! So There. And laying on a beach will be even better. Sun, sand and sea. A lovely suntan is on the way.
What do you mean I will look like a sand blasted bright red lobster? Why do you think I will get sunstroke and become angry, pain filled and dangerous? I am not one for stomping around just because I got sun burnt on my legs! What me? Just because I forget to pack enough sunscreen, sit on the beach making sand castles, and paddle up to my knees because I don't want to get my pants wet?! I am a cool in control woman. I Know how to look after myself. I know how to keep myself cool on the beach. Of course I do.
I think. Seriously guys, this is just an example of how people think. We forget that getting too much sun can be dangerous. So take a look below to see how to keep safe from the sun on the beach
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How to Keep Cool on the Beach in Summer. The real Way!
Stay Hydrated
Seriously, having fun is a dangerous business. A hell of a lot of people leave their common sense at home when they go on vacation. They believe that, because it is time for rest and relaxation, everything around them will be safe and protected. So here's a few tips for keeping cool on the beach.
Make sure that you take a cooler and stock up with ice cold water, or you favorite drinks. Add loads of ice to not only chill the drinks but cool yourself down too. Don't take alcohol to a beach. Not only is it illegal in some States or Countries, but it will dehydrate you. Taking a cooler with you, will be more convenient, and will save you loads of money. Being in the sun can make you thirsty within ten minutes. And what's the point in getting comfortable if you have to keep getting up and running to the nearest shop or beach bar for a drink?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beach Chair
Most people tend to set up their beach chair or lounger back up on the dunes. But the best place to put it is right at the waters edge. There's nothing worse than deciding to go for a dip in the sea, and having to walk half a mile down to the water, getting covered in sand on the way. It's not too bad on the down trip, but when your feet are lovely and clean, its not much fun having to walk back the same way only to be covered in grainy sand that takes the skin of your toes.
Then, when you eventually get there, you spend ten minutes either wiping the sand away, or trying to find a bucket of water to pour over them. We always forget to take the bucket with us to the water! Another reason for setting up by the water is that you can dangle your feet in the surf. Along with the ocean breeze, you will feel much cooler and more comfortable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beach Umbrella
When you head for the beach, you always presume that you will find a lovely shady spot on a lounger with an umbrella. Wrong! By the time that you get there, all of the best places will have been taken. You see it everytime that you go to the ocean. Hundreds of people keeping cool, and a few poor miserable beings seated on an exposed seat, trying desperately to keep cool. My taking an umbrella with you, it doesn't matter if you end up just laying on your beach towel, or anywhere else. You have a lovely shady spot at your fingertips.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cool head Beach Pillows
We all know what's it like. There we are, laying on the sand or lounger, just getting comfortable, and the next thing we notice is that our heads start to become really hot and sweaty. So taking a Cool head Beach Pillow with you is a great idea. It is simply a water filled pillow. And the great thing is that you don't have to take a bulky pillow to the beach. This one folds up. When you get there, all you have to do is walk down to the sea, and fill it up! If you want it to be really cold, just pop it into your cooler for a while. How cool is that? Of course if you forget to take it, just get a beach towel, dip it in the ocean and fold it under your head. If your head is cool, then the rest of you will feel better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sarongs, Scarfs and Caps
A lot of laying about on the beach actually involves moving. Whether to get another drink, go in the ocean, or just chat with your friends. This is the time when you can forget that the suns rays are pretty dangerous. We are careful when sitting in the sun, or heading for the water, but forget about the bits inbetween. You don't want to put on anything heavy, and you certainly don't need to get your day clothes wet or sandy. So a Sarong or tunic that you can just slip on is a must. This will protect you from the sun and keep you cool. Also, a lot of women don't like parading around in just a bikini or costume! Especially if we haven't got that svelt like figure. In other words, most of us! So covering up is just the sensible thing to do
WARNING - A Child's Temperature Can Change Very Quickly and be Fatal.
. If the sun is really hot, a child should always be covered. Either with a cap on their head, or a long T shirt. Sunscreen can only do so much. Where children are concerned, you can never be too careful. A child's temperature is not as stable as an adult. It can change in the blink of an eye. I shudder sometimes when I see a baby or small child running around with hardly anything on, for hours on end. Or a baby left in a buggy on the sand. It makes me want to go up to the mother and shake her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Going in the Ocean.
Now I know this is blatantly obvious, but bare with me! If you want to keep cool, jump in the sea! Yep, so far so good! But there is one thing that you had better not forget. Make sure that you wear a strong sunscreen while you are doing it. The suns rays can actually penetrate the water, at least five feet below the surface. So while you are bobbing around showing off your great swim moves, just remember that the sun is burning a hole in your head! Oh, and your shoulders and back etc. And then when you eventually decide that you have had enough of that darn exercise, get out, slap some more suncream on and go and lie down for a well earned rest! having fun can be so exhausting!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Water Fights! Yeah! And of course that seaside must. The Sunscreen!
If you have children with you, why not take loads of water pistols, balloons, and beach balls? You can fill them with water and have a great time getting everybody soaking wet! Not only will all that lovely water get rid of the sand that has decided to take up residence in you bikini bottoms, Yep I know the feeling! It will also cool you down quickly if you have a sudden heat surge. We sometimes forget that the body can change temperature really quickly. This is how sunstroke can grab you. One minute your are fine, the next, you are being carted off in an ambulance heading for A & E!
And please don't forget the Sunscreen. I know I keep on and on and on...But seriously it is the most, and I mean, most important thing for you to do. Keep splashing it on. It doesn't matter if the children look like white yeti's covered in cream and sand, with a SP level of 50. So what? They have to be protected. And so do you. always make sure that the back of your neck is protected. This part of your body, if burned, can actually kill you. It is the brain stem. Need I say more!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All it takes is a little common sense.
So, as you can see, my little rant at the beginning about knowing it all, well, proved I didn't know it all! If you take care, you will have a great summer by the ocean. If not, you will end up like a sand blasted bright red lobster. Rather like this photo. I have never seen such sun damage in my life. How this woman could allow herself to get in this state is beyond me. We can't see her face. But that is probably a bonus! By the fact that she has a child with her (The photo is not pixelated, its just protecting the child's identity) it shows that she must be in her 30s or 40s. Unbelievable. And very selfish.
How to keep cool on the beach? Now you know!
Enough said!

OMG--I would truly be ashamed walking around with that kind of leather look-I guess I cherish my skin more than to do that!!
My fave is to sit at the waters edge with my beach chair-really cools you off. Nice job!
I live near the beach and I don't tell you the number of "bright red lobters" I see. As for the picture of the wrinkled and burned woman, I see one like her every weekend on the beach. First, I thought with my friend that it was the grandmother of twins, but then when we heard the twins called her "Mom", it was a shock... And what was alarming was that the 8-year-old twins were also burned. Thanks for this useful hub.
Some great tips there Nell. Let us hope that we get the weather to use them.
Great tips. Thank you for the hub!
The profile pic hurt just looking at it but the one with the Elephant skin is horrible. Better block identity's on that one for sure. Great start to this one done in your unique & estimable style. Great info & books too. We're suppose to get some sun for the vitamin D, most sunscreens block that out. At least 7 minutes screen free should do it. Hey Nell, do you English women not let nature take its course with the leg hair like some do on the Continent?..:D
The beach is such fun and I loved your "sun kissed Goddess" remark. You are right that common sense is all it takes to be safe. Rated up and useful.
Hey Nell, your beach ideas are great. Jumping in the sea is my favorite part...lol.
That woman, is that really her skin? OMG, how does she live with that? Gosh I can't believe it!
Awesome tips- many of which had never occurred to me before! In other news, the photo of the woman with leather skin is going to give me bad dreams for a month O_O
You have reminded us of all the fun reasons to enjoy time spent at the beach while also taking some good precautions to avoid that red lobster or leathery skin look. Thanks!
Great tips to keep cool in the hot sun. The lady with the wrinkled skin is beyond scary. Yowzers...I'm glad I'm not her kid, how embarassing! :)
Hi Nell... been burnt far to often to recall over the years of spending many long hours in the sun on some Yukon lakes. They were all before the sunscreen wave we see today. I think with age and knowledge we hav become more aware and thus more careful as I do today. Thanks for al, the tips and love the way you have put them into words which are easily understood... love you girl....
Blessings and Hugs
Uuuugh...those pictures scare the begeezees out of me! I was once dropped off at a beach that turned out to have no shade or facilities (long story here) but by the time my ride came back to get me I was burned, sand blasted, covered in sand flea bites and I had Monkey Butt (see Denise's hilarious hub)from standing in the ocean trying to cool off all day. I think I looked just like that first photo...Awesome and UP!
This is an excellent and very useful hub, Nell. I too am going to have nightmares about the women in your photos, especially the second one! My mind just can't comprehend how she could allow herself to get that way.
Fantastic Hub, Nell - though I have to admit that the first section really had me wondering where you were headed... :) You definitely offer good, sound, sensible advice. Hopefully, all who read this will follow it.
Regarding the woman with the skin: I don't know how long ago that photo was taken but there is probably a fairly decent chance she is no longer with us. If that's not an invitation to skin cancer, I don't know what is. I can honestly say that's the worst case of over-exposure to the sun I've ever seen.
I've never been one to suntan on the beach. The sun tans I get are sometimes called farmer tans. I have tanned arms from about t-shirt sleeve length. I don't trust the sun and spend about 20 minutes or so walking in the direct sun only. When I was in Greece. I was always covered in loose white clothing as I was outside all day and it was scorching. I usually don't wear heavy make-up, but it protects the skin from the sun, so I did the whole time I was there.
Oh my goodness. I will never get in the sun ever again, that's what i call baked skin, how terrible!!! If i change my mind, i will remember your excellent tips.
Going to the beach is the most enjoyable activity in Summer. Thanks for share all these good things we should do while on the beach. Nell, I felt thirsty every time I saw drink coolers. I love your tips above, though there's no summer in my country. But now the weather is good for outdoor activity, because it is dry season in Indonesia. Well done, my friend. You got my vote again and again. Have a nice weekend!
Prasetio
As a tropical country, the sun always shine every year. Even in the rainy season. But in dry season, every day so "hot" and almost dry of course. You can visit my country someday. Cheers..
Your tips are good advice. I have always loved the sun and beach but know to keep it in small doses at the beginning of the summer with lots of sunscreen. I still tan but thank God am nowhere near the leatherlady even in my sixties!
Great job, Sweetpea! It only makes me wish i could see the sun tho, Julys are always rainy affairs here in Alaska... that leathery woman, oh, my gosh! I thought she had leather pants on!!! Thanks for that reminder!!! Love yaz, lily
Gotta love the woman who is so wrinkled - is she like 30? I suppose by rights, I should look like that having grown up in Southern California and been a beach bunny my whole youth - but lucky for me, I have darker skin and tanned instead of burned....now that Central Oregon sun - yikes - it's brutal - so have had to be a bit more careful. Great tips and love the lay-out~
Yikes! I stay OUT of the sun! Even at the ranch I am covered up when outside. I can't imagine what I'd look like (if even alive!) if I'd indulged in sun worship the way I started out. Big half-dollar-size blisters that were painful to touch - and as soon as they were almost well, I went back, spent another day at the pool - and did it again! Big runny blisters. I was about 13. I got smarter but it was when I finally developed sun allergy when boating was a big thing in my life that I finally got wise enough to stay out of it unless covered. By the way, no color of skin is immune to the harmful rays. I am very fair, but dark people get melanoma too. I guess I could have gotten it at any of several dumb times of my life.
Good that you've written some sensible advice, Nell!
My skin doesn't get along well with sunscreen, besides. Covering up is my best bet. When it's so hot, that can be uncomfortable, though cotton or linen is not too bad. Any man-made fiber is like wrapping oneself up in plastic-wrap. Actually, staying out of the sun is the best idea. You're right about winter - the sun may not be quite as direct then, but it's still capable of deep burning. Our temperatures have reached 100 or more now for 31 days in a row, with some reaching nearly 108 real temperature. When they figure in the humidity and other factors, it "feels like" much more.
There are literally deaths from heat.
Great tips (and you always make me smile :) - the last thing I want to do is look like an old suitcase.
Following your advice is the only way to go.
I love it all and am lucky never to be burned. Thanks for these detailed tips.
The older I've gotten, the better I am about protecting myself from the Sun's Rays.This Hub of yours Neil was a Wonderful reminder and aid along with lots of good and Useful suggestions...Sun Up and Enjoy, Carefully!
Let us hope that we get the weather to use them.
We are living close to the beach here in Cyprus and you really have to be careful with the sun. So many tourists leave the common sense at home. Sunbathing at 12 without any protection. Crazy!
Great hub BTW, it's really useful!!
That picture of the lady that looks like leather is enough motivation for me to keep myself hydrated and keep a lot of sunscreen on. I love the cool beach pillow also, great idea!
I like that cool pillow and glad I saw that! The woman with leather skin is sad. Good hub.
That's definitely funny and useful information. I can certainly relate to the cold winters and then trying to get a glimpse of the sun in the summer to make up for it. You're absolutely right though, the sun can be dangerous so taking precautions is the smart thing to do. Thanks for sharing!
Holy cow! Please tell me that the picture of that woman's leather skin is not real! Seriously, how much time in the sun would it take for that to happen. Hang on while I run to the store and get some SPF 200 lol.
Hey thanks for making our weekend you have suggested nice couple of days for one of the best outing at beach. I would surely implement them.
Great hub. The picture of that womans skin definetly makes you want to protect yourself from the sun.Living in the Grand Canyon State you don't need the beach to get burnt here. I'll definetly be running to the store for some sunscreen because I don't want to look like that woman. Thanks
Nice hub...
Once i had bad experiance with sun burns and i wish i could do something about it. That was first time i got burned and last time i hope. I used suncream, but that did not provide protection needed.
Your post made me laugh! Very funny! But I do know how not funny a sunburn can be. When I was visiting Argentina, my wife and I spent a LOT of time on the beaches there. Once, in a small beach resort town called Cariló, we spent a few hours in the sub tropical sunshine. I had no sunscreen and when we were done for the day, I was as red as a lobster. I will never forget to bring sunscreen again! Lesson learned.
One thing I will point out about your post, you never mentioned anything about the all important sunglasses? Sunglasses are very important. Wearing shades has long been the norm for beach dwellers that want to radiate a truly cool demeanor and protect their eyes from the dangers of intense UV rays. Especially at the beach!
Thanks for such a nice information
Fun read - Love the beach, not the burn! Very nicely done. You rock! ;o)
How about visiting the UK beach... won't have to much trouble with the sun ;)
Excellent post! We here in Myrtle Beach see quite a few "overly roasted" people (none as bad raisin you showed). The sun creeps up on you if you aren't careful!
Nell,
Great article and glad to hear you preaching sunscreen. So important!! I tell my patients in the pharmacy to simply buy the highest SPF they can. Is SPF50 overkill? Maybe. But who cares. And re-apply often. Great stuff! Thanks!
I like your post.It is very informative.The beach pillow has such a versatile design that we can use the strap as a handle to carry around and we can even use it to place on beach chair.Find more information about here getcoolhead.com
I'll try these next time on one of our many Southern California beaches. Voting this Up and Useful.

Okay, I love the cool water pillow for staying cool at the beach. And your other great opitions for keeping cool are quite helpful. Now, the picture of the woman with "Leather" for skin; Yikes!! If this single image isn't strong enough to motivate people to use sunscreen and caution when in the sun, I have no idea what is! Awesome hub Nell! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.
