How To Tell If A Psychic Or Fortune Teller Is Genuine Don't Pay Out For Fraudsters

Psychic Readings

There are many Psychic Reading sites on the Internet these days, and throughout the Country you will find loads of weekend flea markets or sales that always have a Psychic in residence. What with Clairvoyant, Medium or Psychic Painters selling their wares, how do we know which one is genuine or is in fact a con artist?

In my town we often have Psychic Fairs, and I have visited them loads of times. Mainly to buy my Tarot Cards or pick out a piece of Silver jewellery that catches my eye. And on browsing around I see loads of different Readings, from Tarot Cards and Runes, to ghostly Psychic Drawings that tell you that the person the Psychic has drawn for you, is actually your great great grandmother. The point is, they all look so genuine.

And before I go on, I would like to add that I believe most of them really believe that their Gift is actually true. I doubt very much that someone would take up this profession without actually having some sort of Psychic experience. What I do believe is that they think they can do the Cards or speak to great aunt Elsie who lived years ago. But how do we know which one to pick?

Psychology, Suggestion, Manipulation

I have been reading the Tarot Cards ever since I was 16 years old. My whole life before that consisted of loads of different Psychic happenings that got me interested in why and how this sort of thing happened. It was a natural progression that made me want to try and help people by reading the Tarot Cards. Before I go on, I would like to add that I have studied Psychology for over four years, and I could have taken the last course and become a councillor.

So I am fully aware of the fact that a lot of Psychic Readings are nothing more than being able to ‘see’ what the person is like, read how they react, and be aware of the fact that they actually want to believe you, because they are paying you, and of course they want the excitement. Therefore they are very open to suggestion and can easily be manipulated into revealing information and then afterwards, thinking that actually they believe the Psychic is the one that told them this info.

Signs of Fraud

First of all let’s address the fraud. This is blatantly a way to get as much money out of you as possible. The know they are fraudsters, all they want to do is manipulate you, and convince you that they are telling the truth.

So the first thing that you have to do when walking around a Psychic Fair for example, is to go and stand just outside of personal range as I call it, but make sure you can hear, see, and get the impression of what is true and what’s not. Not only will this tell you what’s going on, but you will be able to see whether the Psychic starts to look uncomfortable, giving you sidelong glances and fidgeting for example. I have seen this a number of times, and it’s a great give away.

Second, see how many times they repeat themselves. For example, do they ask for background info, and then throw it back at the recipient later in the conversation? By taking this initiative, it will be obvious that they are ‘fishing’ for information. By playing on the same words and conversation they are actually trying to make you remember the phrase or word that they have got right. They read people, its as simple as that. Also a real Psychic will not charge you too much money. Always go for the cheaper option, because the more expensive ones mean they have been doing this for years. Watch the Psychics face for a little smile or a sign of triumph. Its not hard to see. Count how many times they get something right, compared to what is wrong.

And don't forget to listen into conversations after the recipient has left. Many frauds like to boast to someone that the reading has gone really well, and 'I am such a good reader, etc'.

Fooling Themselves

A Psychic who believes that they are genuine will act with enthusiasm, treating the recipient with respect and smiling a lot. He or she will be so pleased with themselves when they get the answers right, that they tend to give themselves away by this action. Its as though they are guessing, and when it is clear they are spot on, will smile and preen. But what in fact they are doing is reading the person. Its not hard.

Take for example that the person getting the reading is a teenage girl. Its obvious that the Psychic will automatically start talking about boyfriends and school, or meeting a talk dark stranger at a night club! Bit of a give away! They will look all innocent and in fact believe that they have nothing to hide. But in fact they are just getting into the zone of the participant. Even a teenage girl will have other problems, so this is a great give away.

The Real McCoy Genuine Psychics

A real genuine Psychic will stand out a mile. If you know what to look for. He or she will only look at the Tarot Cards or the palm of your hand when doing Palm Reading. He/she will be concentrating so much on what they can see before them, they will not even take a look at the participant. Their concentration will be purely on the Reading. Listen in, and you will see that they talk about all sorts of family life, court cases, illnesses that can be proven by the participant, and things that have genuinely happened in the past. And more importantly, they will admit their mistake if they read it wrong.

If they are doing a Future Reading, and the participant totally disagrees, instead of trying to rectify their mistake, the Reader will turn and say something along the lines of, ‘well this is what I can see.

It may seem strange to you now, but I see this in your future whether you believe it or not’ In other words they won’t care if it sounds ‘out there’ or strange, they say what they see. Simple as that. A real genuine Psychic will also give you a written or taped text of the conversation. They won’t be afraid of any come backs because they believe in what they are saying. Once the participant has got over the initial suspicion, they will see that everything they have been told Is in fact true, or as near to the truth as can be. Even if the reading turns out to be completely wrong, they will still appreciate the fact that they Psychic tried their best and didn't try to lie to them.

How To Act When Sitting For A Reading

You are paying a lot of money for your Tarot or Card reading. So do not give them any information. Never ever tell them anything about your past, where you live or how old you are. But the most important thing is to stay blank. Literally.

Sit comfortably in your chair, do not smile, move around or do anything that will let the Psychic read you. Even a small thing such as scratching your nose, will actually give off signals that they can read. Body language is a very easy thing to pick up on. And when they get something completely right, just nod and say yes or no to whether you understand what they mean. This way, you will be able to pick out the genuine from the fraud. All con artists use this ploy. You will totally stump them by keeping still, have a blank expression, and never ever give them info that they can work on. This is when they will show their true colors.

And the most important thing is to keep an open mind.

I have been doing readings for years, If I get it wrong, I hold my hands up. I also tell them before I start that I read the Tarot Cards with a dash of Psychology to help them with a problem. If they ask me where the info comes from, I just hold my hands up and admit that I have no idea. I explain that it could either be a power from ‘beyond’ or a part of my brain that somehow picks up signals from the participant, even future readings, or something that scientists do no know yet.

And most important. The participants keep coming back. Because I tell the truth about my ‘powers’. Trust the participant, and most importantly they will trust you.

Have a great time with your Psychic Reading, and most importantly, never ever take it too seriously. Nobody knows the future, it is down to you. We are just there to help you see the choices that you can make.

Good luck!

Did You Know?

The tarot, first known as trionfi then later tarocchi, was mainly played by the French and the Italians. The cards were first used in Europe in the mid 15th Century. To start with, they were used as a pack of playing cards.

But from the 18th Century, Tarot Cards have been used by mystics and occultists to tell fortunes. Even though the word Tarot is taken from the Italian word tarocchi, it actually doesn't mean anything, but some say that it comes from the Taro river in northern Italy, near Palma.

More mysteriously, another idea is that it comes from the Arabic word turuq, which means 'four pathways'

But maybe there is an even darker side to the Tarot. Some question whether it is related to the words Harut and Marut who were mentioned in a short sentence in the Qu'ran. According to the account, a group of Israelites learned magic, because Two Angels, Harut and Marut, wanted them to demonstrate it for them. But in reality, the two Angels wanted to test their will power. It was told that this magic would be passed on to others by the Devil.

Most Tarot or Card readings these days have to state thet they are for entertainment only, so I will just say, never take it too seriously, have fun and at the end of the day, its something to chat about with your friends!

The above is my opinion and doesn't claim to involve any religion or infringe on anybodys belief.

I have friends who hired a "psychic fortune teller" as part of the entertainment for their 25th wedding anniversary celebration. It was fun and a little spooky because the psychic seemed spot on in some cases. I think your warning to never take a reading too seriously and view it as entertainment that may however, yield some useful insights is spot on.

Hey Nell, thats pleasing to find out about the psychic part in your life. You know I'll never forget that time one night sitting here pondering about what subject to write on next, and the next thing I know, you post "I'm having trouble coming up with a Hub idea too." Also your psychology studies. This is a super Hub with everything one needs to know about Psychics or Fortune Tellers. Very interesting info on the Tarot cards too. How to act when sitting for a reading- you got it- why do some poker players wear shades. Thanks for a great read Nell.

What an interesting hub! I didn't know you read Tarot cards or did psychic readings. You are full of surprises. You give a lot of valuable information here. I have always been leery of "readers", but now knowing there are some legitimate ones, I will follow your suggestions and info on choosing the right one. Thanks for an interesting and timely (Halloween) hub!

Great hub Nell - I read too! Its been 19 years, and learning the Tarot has not only been wonderful for telling fortunes, but its been a great tool for studying the events and phases that I or anyone will go through in a lifetime. I've enjoyed learning each card and each different deck. I think I have 15 of them now - and its so much fun.

Your tips on spotting the fake fortune tellers are great and oh so true. I've gone to several just to get a feel for them. I use the same "rules" you do. I met an awesome psychic recently though, and I would go to her again. She read playing cards, palms, and did numbers and hardly ever looked at me. This was on my recent trip to Sedona, AZ. I think sometimes you have to trust your instincts too when choosing a reader.

Awesome hub. Rated up and interesting and awesome!

Good tips Nell. I, once, was a fortune teller myself. I gave up after a woman burst in tears when I was reading the cards for her. I never read the cards for me or for anybody else ever since. And I did not used a fortune teller for myself either.

But here is another thing from your hub that got me excited: the halloween costume for my daughter.

Thanks a lot for this great idea.

These are wonderful tips to use when consulting a psychic. I've only known one person who I've trusted although I do know people who get strong messages about future events sporadically. They actually spook themselves!

I too read Tarot cards but only when I'm feeling psychic, otherwise I feel less empowered. Cheers,..Rated up!

Hi, Happy, some people do take it seriously, and this can lead to problems, in fact I read somewhere that some celebs won't even go out until they consult a psychic! thats just ridiculous! it is there to be used as a guide, nothing else, I recently did a party! Wow! that was hard work! they were queueing up around the garden! Nell, your words are so true! The town I recently moved from had large psychic fairs at the convention center a couple of times a year, and for me they were only a place to buy interesting items or jewelry and be entertained while listening to others having their "fortunes" told.

But a local New Age bookstore held mini-fairs in its back room several times a year. The shop itself must've been built on a ley line, because just walking through the front door felt like stepping into a different dimension. Admission to the mini-fairs was by donation only *at the door*, which eliminated basing the length or depth of a reading on how much one had paid.

One particular Tarot reading stands out because it proved to be dead on many times over the next year. I'm careful NOT to reveal anything a reader can incorporate into a reading, so none of it could possibly have come from the short chat we had prior to her laying out the cards. The accuracy of it still amazes me over a decade later.

As for paying for online or over-the-phone readings, no way! ;D

Hi, Nell..

Interesting hub. I'm just learning Tarot, and one of the decks you show looks like mine--"Gilded Tarot."

I think the bit about 'devils' is nonsense, and "just for entertainment" disclaimers are needed only thanks to lawyers and the litigious society we have become. People need to "get a grip."

As far as fake psychics 'fishing for information,' I think my reaction would be to challenge them by asking, (loud enough for others to overhear), "You're supposed to be the psychic--you tell me!" :-D

Voted up, useful and interesting! ;-) Cheers!

Nell, I believe it is all about knowing humans and their behaviour versus Life and the laws of nature. There are surely people born with the needed extrasensory perception to ‘read’, ‘feel’, ‘explain’ and ‘predict’ the needs and wishes of others, as well as the possible fulfilment of those needs and wishes. Somehow the average mind still regards this perception as too much of a godly attribute and therefore not to be practiced. I will avoid sitting for a reading, or share my vision of someone’s future, not only because the prohibition of this were thoroughly imprinted onto my conscience, but because I know how easily this – as any religion – takes over the reins of our lives. Thumbs up for an excellent hub about Psychics and Fortune Tellers.

Nell, awesome hub with very important info.

I was taught to never take payment for readings, but a small token of thanks is always a fair exchange. And by small I mean like a cup of coffee :) On the other hand, there are genuine psychics out there who do use their gifts for good and do accept payments. But I do hope folks will bear in mind that as in every practice -from psychics to doctors to plumbers and politicians -there are are some real frauds out there waiting to wring money out of anyone that comes their way. It is the way of life.

In all the scientific testing for psychic powers, no one has ever been able to pass the tests.

What does that tell you?

bethperry profile image

bethperry Level 6 Commenter 8 months ago

Will, scientifically speaking, no one has ever been able to confirm the existence of love either. Scientific evaluation has not confirmed there is a god or such a thing as miracles or even that time as we know it is perceived quite differently for a child than it is perceived by an adult. What this tells me is that the passing of man-made tests is a trivial accomplishment next to the humble acknowledgement of things greater than our mortal selves.

While some things are not provable, claims of psychic powers ARE provable, but to date, no one has ever been able to prove their claimed psychic powers.

I have no doubt that there are some who are quite sincere in their claims, but in the end, not one of them has ever been able to prove it.

Hi, leann, thats part of the fun! bit like a roller coaster ride! lol

Hi, Will, funny you should mention that, I wrote a Hub about Matthew Manning a psychic healer, he doesn't claim to be supernatural, but was studied for five years by scientists and proved that he was in fact 'psychic' in the sense that he could heal people, I know for a fact strange things do happen because I definitely believe in precognition, purely because I have done it all my life, but of course I can't prove it, I don't really feel the need to because I don't understand it myself, I am sure that it is pure science only we haven't discovered it yet, but I always appreciate your opinion Will, and thanks for ready, cheers nell

Hi, beth, so true, it all comes down to faith in one way or another, but I do think being psychic, not the fortune telling sort, but proper psychicness if there is such a word, is probably on the scale of science, the way the universe works, and whether time slows down or speeds up, also other dimensions etc, I like to put it in that category, I love quantum physics so quite believe that has something to do with it, but who knows? thanks as always, nell

Hey Will, you're a sweetheart and one of my favorite authors at Hubpages, so I am happy to say we'll agree to disagree if that's ok?

About the James Randi million dollar offer thing, though: personally I think the chances that his "tests" are UNrigged are about the same as getting milk out of a stud bull. The man started out as a fraud himself and he's made his living (and a mesmerized following) by spewing hatred for religion and anything paranormal since. As a fraud he knows that real psychics view taking money for such a nonsense display as tantamount to a nun dressing in short skirt & fishnets and standing on a street corner just to get "the word" out. It isn't going to happen and he knows it, but the money offer makes him look legit in the eyes of his flock.

I'll be honest and say that I'm fairly skeptical. I had a free reading from a guy I met at a writer's club. He said, "I see an old lady, dressed in black, standing in front of a wooden dressing table with an oval mirror". He knew I had had a checkered past and said, "I see you behind the wheel of a stolen car." Something that I never even contemplated. I think he was aiming for the nearest common denominator, and failing miserably. I do believe that our characteristics are similar, depending on what time of the year we are borne, but this could be related to many things. It's an interesting subject though, and the seances we used to participate in when i was younger take a bit of explaining. Cheers

Hi, Eiddwen, I haven't been for years, but then again I do my own! lol I know, I shouldn't, but I can't help it, the only thing is, if I don't like what I see, I do it again! ha ha

This is really interesting. My best friend is all about fortune tellers and tarot cards and visiting psychics. To be honest, I have never made a call or set foot in a place, but I find this all very informative.

just a quick note...One time my friend Diane and I went to see a local "psychic." Diane was having difficulty with yet, another, bad relationship. She felt she'd fallen into a repetitive behaviorial "pattern." When she asked the seer what she could do about this "pattern," (this, after having gone into great detail about it).....the supposedly "psychic" asked her: "My dear, what do you plan to make with your pattern, a dress???" YIKES!!!

Hi, funmontrealgirl, yes its not for everybody, but it can be fun though! thanks for reading! cheers nell

Hi, Lucky, LOL she was probably counting the money underneath the table at the time! ha ha thanks again nell

Hi, Hattie, I think some just go into it for the money, others take years to perfect the art and earn nothing or next to nothing, these are the ones that stand out, thanks for reading! cheers nell

Hi Nell, it's been quite awhile since I have been hub hopping and I am happy to see that you got yourself a new hub and a very interesting one at that. I do believe we all have "extra" something that makes us perceive or see something about the other person, some people are just better at reading others. But, while there are some really genuine psychics I have also seen a great number of really good fakes...though if its in a fair I do believe it's a lot of fun especially when she tells you what you really want to hear, lol.

I got wonderful information from you, Nell. Some people believe to fortune teller but most of us don't believe this. No one can predict what will happen in the future, only few people can do this ( they are blessed by God because of have this talent). Thank you so much for share with us. I learn much from you. Vote up and have a nice weekend!

Hi, Marie, I believe that most of us actually do have this other sense, but it just disappears for years after one big psychic happening, for example I do believe in Telepathy, as so many people do know when someone is going to phone or bump into them etc, but yes there are so many fakes, sometimes its fun to just listen to them waffling on! ha ha thanks again, and nice to see you, cheers nell

Hi, pras, its a subject that some people believe and others don't but it can be fun for a party or gathering, I hope you are having a great weekend! we are in the middle of a heatwave! evidently England is hotter than Greece at the moment! phew! lol cheers nell

I am always fascinated by tarrotcard reading but as you say there are more false than true one. Also the problem is you only know they are good when it all happens.

Hi, Hello, thats so true! its only when we remember what they said that we start to believe them! but it is also really spooky when they get it right! lol thanks again nell

Voted up and awesome, Nell. Great advice here for people thinking of calling on a psychic or fortune teller. Many of them are definitely frauds...some of them are just intuitive and fewer are actual fully-developed psychics. Wonderful info. at the end, too!

I dunno. I think that those fortune tellers who are able to 'read' people are pretty talented too. It takes a special skill to do that. I started to get into the Tarot a while back and some of the stuff that came up was spot on. Almost creepy. I stopped doing it because I scared myself.

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose Hub Author 7 months ago

Hi, kitty, I think most people believe in themselves that they are psychic, but only some of them can genuinely read something like cards, its just the case of finding the right one! lol thanks nell

Hi, Dolores, I totally agree, sometimes its the cards that really stand out, even if you don't know how to be 'psychic' if you like, just by doing the cards can produce some pretty strange happenings, thanks for reading, cheers nell

Hi Nell,

Your hub reminded me of my days when I was new in this country. Alone and fragile that I got to call the 1-900-psychic lady. And boy, she was a prankster. She kept blabbering and made no sense towards my life. I did not want to upset her so, let her talk and finally hung up the phone after 15 minutes. I was paid for being polite when I received the telephone bill...LOL

With the round of episodes in my life my lesson is that; Our future is in our hands and even though I feel so tempted to know my future in times of distress...I feel like waiting and watching for the end just as I like to watch a fictional movie.

Hi, Ruchira, thats exactly it, I think its always best to see one face to face, at least that way you can tell them they are talking rubbish! lol thanks for reading, cheers nell

My sweetest English Rose, there is no way I can pass up one of your hubs w/o at least "checking it out." Marked up and interesting. As usual, however, I can't keep my mouth shut. Will says it's never been proven, and he's right, but millions of people will attest to fortune-telling and whatever other phenomena that seem to be available only through psychic powers. I'm not in this debate. How many of us who call ourselves believers in a Creator of the universe and mankind and claim to believe in the Bible as Yahweh's Holy Word have read (or thought about looking up and reading) any of the verses where Jah gives direct commands to stay away from divination of any kind. And I bet Hyph knows the situation in (I think) one of the books of Samuel where a "spectre" or some such "fortune-teller" showed up and made a huge problem for somebody--forget who. Sooooooo -- to me it isn't a question of science but of beliefs and "holy commandments" for want of a better term! I'm lousy at these type "debates," but had to share my own thoughts after I read bethperry's comment, because as many atheists and agnostics as I've talked with or listened to, I've never heard one who didn't believe in love. Since I try (miserably) to follow Biblical teachings (which, yes, many people believe are out of date, but I don't) I do also try to practice love--which it does teach should be practiced. I'm outta here! Said enough, but you've written a good hub and have great pics, so what I believe has nothing to do with what you've pub'd!

Hi, Teylina, lol! thats fine, I love your ideas and everything you have to say, we all have our opinions, I do know that 'psychic' phenomena does work, but I don't think anybody can sit there for an hour and say they can psychically tell someone everything about them, it doesn't work like that, its a bit like a faulty tv aerial, and some are fake, it can be quite distressing for someone if they get a false reading, because a lot of people do believe. I think it all depends on how you see psychic phenomena, I believe its scientific, and maybe part of our brains that we haven't used yet, thanks as always, nell

Teylina profile image

Teylina Level 6 Commenter 6 months ago

Knowing that the average person (and above) use only something like 1/10th of 1% or something like that, I have no doubt that scientifically there are parts of our brains that are wired for some people in different ways. I'm reminded of many studies done w/twins, for example. And I will reiterate, in case I didn't make it clear, that you did do a good job with the hub because there ARE psychics who are NOT Fraudulent. They are very real and correct. That's where I didn't make myself plain. I personally choose to stay away because if they do have those powers, I don't want to be with them. The frauds? "Misleadings/misreadings/etc." They oughta be locked up for hurting the people they hurt. And they do a lot of damage--much more than the real ones!

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose Hub Author 6 months ago

Hi, Teylina, that's okay I do understand why you would want to stay away from them it can be a bit disconcerting, I remember my friend was really spooked out the first time I told her something that was going to happen, but after that she just laughed, we were waiting for a bus to go into the next town, and I said, without thinking, 'don't know why you are in a hurry, its going to break down when we get halfway there' and low and behold it broke down when I said! lol in the end she got used to it, and when she came home from America, she lived there a lot of the year, I always knew when she came back, in fact I would phone her the moment she got into her house! lol but as you said, frauds are a menace, so many people, especially celebs use them so much, it gets to be a habit and they can't even go out there door without consulting one! thanks again

you say: Even if the reading turns out to be completely wrong, they will still appreciate the fact that they Psychic tried their best and didn't try to lie to them.

so by your definition, there's no way to prove a psychic wrong - thus psychic claims of validilty crash completely, since one of the basic elements of any scientific investigation is the ability to falsify the hypothesis

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose Hub Author 10 days ago

Hi cascoly, sorry no, what I mean is that if for some reason the psychic gets it completely wrong, they should be made to hold their hands up and say sorry. There is a difference between a 'real' psychic and a charlatan. The real one will try their best, but sometimes things can't be seen, on the other hand a charlatan will deliberatly con, okay? thanks for reading, cheers nell
