Take a Holiday in England and Visit the Birth Place of Legends.
74England is the birth place of Legends. With its rich history and stories, knights in shining armour, and so many colourful characters, there is always something to see and do if you take a holiday in England this year. There are some wonderful places to visit. Whether you prefer the sea, with its great beaches and surfing, or choose to head for the Capitol London, you won't be disappointed.
From Cornwall to the North East, there is so much to see and do. As a tourist destination, Cornwall has some wonderful beaches, fantastic waves for surfing and every sort of sea sport that you want to try out. The mighty cliffs soar over the ocean and the view looking down on the crashing waves is awesome. Your imagination will go wild, as you spy a cubby hole cave, knowing that pirates and brigands stored their booty there, hiding from the local towns folk. And if you see a light upon the cliff top, you might be forgiven for thinking that it is the ghost of a pirate, swinging his lamp, trying to call the ships onto the rocks to steal their cargo.
Tintagel Castle
Climbing through the hills listening to the sound of breakers crashing through Merlin's Cave, you turn a corner a come across one of England's greatest legends. Tintagel Castle. For over 800 years, stories have told how a small boy was born to the beautiful Queen Igerna, who grew up to be the famous King Arthur who ruled England with his magician Merlin by his side. Fighting against evil, King Arthur and Merlin staved off enemies and conquered all who fought against him. Merlin's spirit is said to dwell in the cave below, where he lived out his days protecting his lord.
The Castle itself has its own fascinating history. It was built upon hundreds of years of settlements. Since the Romans invaded and built the first settlements, there has been fortresses and a palace that has fallen into dust, only to be resurrected in the time of King Arthur. There has been speculation that this castle wasn't in fact anything to do with Arthur. Until a few years ago when archaeologist made an amazing discovery. A stone, with the name Arthnou scratched on it, was found to be 1,400 years old! Exactly the right time and place to prove that the great King Arthur did live there. Of course there has been speculation that it is a fake, until it was dated. As the experts wrote, 'There is no doubt that it is an authentic stone of that age, whether it was written for or about King Arthur, we shall never know'.
Tintagel Castle is an amazing place to visit. There are many ruins that you can clamber around, finding new treasures and quiet places to just sit and stare. And imagine that you can see Guinevere and Lancelot riding into the distance.
If you visit in the summer months, don't be surprised to find a story teller there, waiting to tell you the legend of King Arthur.
Merlin's Cave
The London Eye
Queen Victoria Statue In London
Kings and Queens.
London is one of the most versatile and fascinating cities in the world. Starting with the London Eye tourist attraction, a modern masterpiece, which is situated on the South Bank of the River Thames, this giant wheel will give you the best views over the City. Or maybe you would prefer a tour of St. Paul's Cathedral, with its famous tombs of Nelson, Wellington and so many more historical figures. Take a wander around its magnificent halls and listen to the voices of choir boys at practise.
There are so many sites to see in London. Buckingham Palace, Madame Tussauds, and of course the famous Tower of London, with it's famous White Tower where Anne Boleyn, wife of Henry V11 had her head cut off. She is just one of many ghostly figures said to still be seen today. So if you are visiting, and feel a chill on the back of your neck, don't be surprised if you see something out of the corner of your eye! It maybe just a visitor like you. Or maybe not.
Hadrian's Wall
The North East Of England.
If you decide to travel North, you will not be disappointed. If Castles are your favourite thing, then this is the place to be. And you must visit Hadrians Wall, originally over 80 miles long which was built by the Romans to keep the Pict's and Scottish out! It was a military stronghold, a line of defence and a way of life occupied by hundreds of people.
Apart from all the fantastic history, you can shop until you drop. The North of England is a great place to stay as it has so much to see and do. The nightlife is busy, and for all ages, there are restaurants dotted around every corner, and the hotels are reasonably priced.
Robin Hood Festival
Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest
If there is one place in England that will get the kids excited, it has to be Sherwood Forest in Nottingham. With the legend of Robin Hood well known around the world, then this is the place to steep yourself in England's most well known outlaw.
I’m the green man in my folklore form of Robin Hood, Champion of the forest.
In rural tradition, I’m cast each spring as the King of the May, battling the forces of evil winter to win the hand of my ‘May Queen’ Marian.
The story of Robin Hood is steeped in Legend. Mixing folk lore with real people, Robin has been twined with the green man, spirits and Lord of the Green Wood.
The tale of Robin Hood was for a long time, believed to have been made up of different stories, bringing together the most heroic tales and naming them after him. But after finding a poem called 'Piers Plowman' written in 1377 which mentions Robin Hood, and other numerous references, scholars now believe that actually it could well be true.
With magical names such as Friar Tucks Well and The Kings Wood, Sherwood Forest is a magical place to visit. With miles of woodland to take a walk through, and plenty of activities with medieval men and women showing you the way, your children will love it, especially as they can dress up and take part in all the adventures. I am sure this will be a trip you will never forget.
Clovelly North Devon
Coast to Coast
With so many sights to see, when you take your holiday in England, you may want to take your last few days on a trip to the coast. Sit back, relax and lay on some of England's lovely beaches. From the West with its crashing waves and beautiful beaches, to the Isle of Wight that is situated of the South coast, well known for its multi coloured sand. Then of course there is the Jurassic Coast. Lyme Regis where you will find loads of fossils washed up on the beach, or maybe you would prefer the old fashioned Clovelly which is situated in Devon. With winding alleys, and lamps adorning the pretty little cottages, Donkeys carrying goods up the hill, and pretty little cafes and gift shops, you are spoiled for choice. There are so many places to stay, you will be hard pushed to decided exactly which one you want to visit!

My city Rockford, IL has a campus in London, England, and I always plan to visit there. With all of the civil unrest I am going to wait until things cool off.
Wow! what an incredible journey through England. Just when I think you have done it all--there is more and more! I enjoyed this very much. You have this laid out beautifully and it is easy to understand. Keep up the great HUBS. Up one and Useful. Hey! I'm now your fan! RJ
What a super tour. I want to go tomorrow. You said Sherwood Forest would be a great place for the kids. Kids?! I want to go to Sherwood Forest! I loved Robin Hood. You think I might get lucky and bump into Errol Flynn somewhere in the woods? :)
A beautiful evocation of a wonderful country.
Thanks Nell. I hope it inspires plenty of people to come to visit.
I love hubs like this! I will probably never get the opportunity to visit England, except through pictures. Sometimes it is better. Ref: pyramids of Gisa look glamorous in photos, but not at all in reality. Thanks Nell! Voted UP and awesome.
Hi Nell,
When you were talking about "so many colourful characters...." were you thinking of me or someone else ?
You beat me to the punch on the special invitation.
However I feel the need to bring you to task on behalf of the BRITISH Tourist Board for only including England as if we Scots have neither history, legends or colurful characters.
I would imagine that you will be hearing from our Welsh and Irish cousins in due course so in an attempt to help dig yourself out of the hole may I suggest this is merely Part One of Nell's tour of Britain !
Nell, I love this, I've always wanted to see England, esp. The Sherwood Forest. I also would like to see the castles. The hills and valleys look so green and beautiful. After thinking about Prince William's wedding, i say that it's a good event. It makes people happy and we need to have something like that and i loved Princess Diana, who i'm sure is smiling. Thank you.
Cheers
Nell ,you only touched very briefly on the North East of our lovely country...what about the beaches which are better than Cornwall.?..I can say that because I live within 5 minutes walk of one..from Whitley Bay right up to Bambrugh Castle there are beautiful sandy beaches and Castles galore to explore..maybe I will do a HUB on the North East Coast !!
Nice Hub X
Thank you so much for sharing this great hub. One of my favourite pastimes is armchair travelling and i had a right treat today.
Brilliant as always.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Well done Nell-In 1997 I did visit England for about 10 days with my family. My Father found a distant relative that lives in Bath so we stayed with them a few days (adorable little English Cottage)and then went on to see London, Stonehenge, Oxford University and North Devon. I just loved it because of the rich history as you pointed out - so much to see! I would go back in an instant! Great Hub and memories! Thanks for a great tour!
I spent eighteen months in the UK in my younger days. The English towns are just gorgeous aren't they, and your photos of ruins and Merlin's cave makes me realize how nice it would be to revisit and see what I missed last time or have forgotten!
Hello Nell, thanks for outlining tourist attractions in England. I hope to visit someday and see some castles that are shown in the movies!
By the way, you're in my "hippy happy days" hub, the continuing saga of hub friend stories
Nell
Great hub and photos.
Do you have hubs on the south and west locations of England.
Cheers
Loved the virtual tour. My Spring Break is just around the corner. I'll be in England in my dreams. Thanks for sharing!
Great as usual. Saw Kate in the news today losing down for her wedding. I'd think she would wanna fill out a little for the groom. I hope those two don't disappoint me, they seem the real thing, I think there is a mystery about this wedding you should sniff it out Sherlock. Would make a great hub!
Wonderful Hub, Nell!
Two of my favorite childhood books where Robin Hood and King Arthur, which developed into a love for historically set romances and mystical tales all set throughout the United Kingdom and your hub keeps that fantasy going. It was a wonderful trip making you want to see and hear more. Looking forward to crossing the Channel again in the near future.
Just lovely, as usual Nell. My son and I will be headed over that way in the fall. We still haven't planned our trip completely, but your hubs will definitely influence our intentions.
Wow....wow...wow...wow. May I continue my "wow" again? this was so beautiful, Nell. You have done a great job here. I love all your reviews about holiday in England. I'll put all these places on my travel list. I hope I can see this place in person someday...amen. Well done, my friend. I give my vote to you. Cheers....
Love and peace,
You know maybe it is crazy but I am having a wild guess.
Ok, I wrote my wild guess, probably very wrong but why did she have to lose weight> I'm hoping!
Hi Nell..I wrote the HUB about the North East Coast...hope you enjoy it if you get the chance to read it
Wow Nell! Very good hub. I have always been facinated with King Arthur and the knights of the round table. What a beautiful place, so full of history and mystery :D
I just want to jump on a plane and fly over there! What an experience that would be. :D
Thankyou for sharing Nell, great read.
I love your pictures and descriptions. They make me want to return to England! I did not get to see King Arthur country or Sherwood Forest, but I thoroughly enjoyed Oxford, Cambridge, Stratford, and, of course, London. Great hub!
A wonderful and detailed hub. Thank you.
Now you've got me all excited! I'll be in the North for a short time this summer. I'll have to report back! Cheers.
A great hub about our beautiful country Nell, and its history and legends. I have been to Tintagel several times, and found the Holy Well the hard way. I was looking for something built up like a wishing well, and found out differently when I stumbled into cold water up to the knees! It is a natural spring and had almost been completely hidden by the long grass. Damp jeans for the rest of the day LOL!
What fascinating places to see - I love Merlin's Cave~! If I come over for a looksee, I promise to look you up too!
Hello,I love your hub.If I ever make it to England I will need to allow lots of time for site seeing.I love looking into the History and visiting ruins or castles.Your photography is amazing.England looks like a great exciting place to visit.
I hope to be there one day. It's just too far from us here in Manila, hahaha.
Thanks, Nell for taking me a tour in beautiful place. I love all informations about these places. All stunning pictures were so great. Well done, my friend. Rated up as usual.
Prasetio,
Excellent article which i enjoyed reading and can also serve as a good documentary.
That was great. My dream vacation would be Europe and England would be my first stop...I may never leave!
Hi Nell,
You have done a superb job of complimenting our great country.
I live in the Derbyshire Dales, which is truly beautiful.
The places you write about on your fantastic Hub, are very well described, and you evoke fabulous memories for me.
When my children were young, we took them to all these places.
I think you have done a remarkable job here.
Great work Nell.
Nell, you've talked me into it (actually, I needed no convincing, but you've made me long for it even more) I need to plan a vacation to England. I really want to see all the magickal places like Tintagel and Avalon, etc. I've heard that Arthur and Guinevere are supposedly buried at Glastonbury, what about that? Great hub!
Nice photos and article - the photos alone makes me want to visit
Hi Nell,
How I missed this one I'm not sure, still better late than never.
A great hub , well presented and full of facts and information.
So I push all the buttons here also.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Beautiful pictures Nell. We do live in a fascinating country, with an interesting history and many old legends. Just a bit of a shame that it doesn't seem to want to stop raining!
It's my experience that this tiny island can't hold or keep all the history that's taken place there in its proper time frame. If you happen to be sensitive to such things, there's a good chance you'll be treated to glimpses of several historical periods at the same time, as I was, without entering any history-rich landmark like the Tower of London. ;D
An elaborately decorated 18th century coach/carriage pulled by a team of four matched horses crossing a busy thoroughfare in West Hampstead is the one that impressed me the most. At first I didn't realize it was semi-transparent...that through it I could see the double decker bus that was on course to "hit it" broadside at the intersection (but didn't). The coachman sitting high on the box on the front of the coach never looked left or right, which would indicate the bus and other vehicles on that street didn't exist in whatever time period he was living in. At that point, it dawned that there had been other instances during that trip where scenes from earlier centuries were transposed on the current, but due to jet lag or weariness from sightseeing hadn't registered as such until I saw the coach-and-four. ;D
Oh, I thoroughly agree that the jet lag, etc, must've put my brain in an Alpha state where I was receptive to things I'd miss under normal circumstances. Glad to know something similar happened to you, but not surprised that the door on that other dimension snapped shut as soon as you became aware the cobbles were "wrong". One of the explanations is that they're memories from a previous life triggered by a particular sight or smell. Whatever. Would be nice to be able to call them up at will!
It's not just England, btw. I once picked up a rather large wicker basket in a U.S. big box store and was instantly transported to market day in a 17th century village in France. Had a basket just like it in my hand, no less! According to my children, I was "gone" for several minutes, long enough that they thought I was having a seizure or some other medical crisis.
Like I said before, I want to come to the UK.
Hey Nell, I am published again, yay! Come by and visit.
Mo
Wonderful hub! I have been to different places in England and I should say, there are lots of history in that country. Hadrian Wall is amazing. One can picture how the people lived there in the Romans time. In London Tower, my hairs were standing imagining how the wives of Henry VIII heads were cut off.Voted up and thanks for sharing.
I agree! The Tower of London IS creepy, even in broad daylight and without entering any of its structures. In that sense, I believe it's true that spilled blood really does retain the horror of the event that caused it to be shed on a particular spot.
Hi Nell... loe what you have put together here and found it very interesting... Thanks for the tour. What say all us hubbers meet at Hadrian's Wall. Tea would be nice...
Blessings and Hugs

Loved this! I went to London for 2 weeks years ago and saw so much but some way some how I missed what you have here in this hub! Makes me want to return soon!
I would love to visit England sometime and visit some of those fabulous places. I was fascinated with the photo of Hadrian's Wall. I had heard of it but had never seen a photo. Enjoyed this hub. Thanks! Voted up, useful and interesting.
