One for the child in all of us.
They come in the night, such a wondrous sight,
And their eyes and their wings danced in flames,
From the tiniest mite, to the gangliest sprite,
They laughed at the wonderful game.
-
They sneaked in, in two's, and took off their shoes,
So as not to make a noise inside, then crept up the stairs,
With quiet and care,
Making sure too leave no one behind.
-
And after they'd peeped, and saw three humans asleep,
They shifted around in a whirl,
'Down to the kitchen' hissed Violet Pippin,
The tiniest, tiniest girl.
-
So, picking and poking, 'neath doors , under chairs,
Pulling at curtains, and skipping on stairs,
Whooshing and dropping marmalade on the floor,
Skating and hopping, pulling out drawers.
-
A knock at the window , a giggle so soft,
Sweet sugared candy, carried aloft.
-
Like birds oh so tiny, with a hush of Fae wings,
Small bodies like fire flies, such delicate things.
With mouths full of chocolate, and faces so red,
They sat covered in ice cream, with jam on their heads,
-
Then, sudden movement, footsteps on the stairs,
Some still eating pudding, caught unawares,
A signal, a whisper ,
A snatch of last bite,
Sweet fluttering, like oak leaves, as one, they took flight.
-
Lights flickered and glittering, such a strange thing,
Like moonlight on water, a soft shimmering,
Reflecting like rainbows, in moons twilight glow,
They whisper and grumble, line up in a row.
-
All slip through the window, holding fast to the pane,
Waiting for stragglers,
Then shut it again.
-
Off into the trees, sharing the load,
Some fly to their bushes,
Others take to the road.
-
Stores safe now for Winter, So cold it can be,
Food for their children, and warmth for their trees.
-
As darkness descended, and peace reigns once more,
Please listen most carefully, for that knock on your door,
Don't shut all your windows, leave cupboards ajar,
For when winter does hit us,
They won't be afar.

I started writing poetry few years ago, and was lucky enough to get this one published in an Anthology, but unfortunatly I did'nt manage to buy the book at the time, for financial reasons. This is the first...

Such a cute and imaginative poem. Now I will know who to blame when things go amiss. Ha!
What a beautiful poem, so full of charm and imagery. One of the few poems I've read here that has both rhyme and perfect rhythm. Thumbs up!..and yes, I believe in faeries.
Conjures up such lovely images :)
I will be reading this to my 5 year old grandaughter when she gets home from school tomorrow. I can just see her face as I read it to her. Thanks for proving material for me to share with her (and me).. LOL
You struck a really great tone with this one. You can just hear it being read with a twinkle in the eye. Well done, again.

Awesome! This would make one excellent childrens' book. The poem is so visual and beautiful!
Wonderful poem. Now I know why I leave the cupboards open. I'll have to let my husband go around closing them after me, and then wait until he's asleep to open them again just enough!
Nell, that was absolutely wonderful. They are always moving things on us and taking small bits. I don't mind, except when they hide my keys! You have a wonderful way of expressing yourself. Wish I had your talent. Keep taking us into the realm of happiness. Namaste
That was wonderful Nell, I don't think I have read any of your poems, shame on me, I been fighting all day trying to get two hub on, I guess they didn't like the titles I don't know but I am done for the day. I think it is easier to work all day than get a hub up sometimes, I will get back for more first chance though I promise, Polly
