The Liverpool Time Slips The True Story Of Mysterious Occurences In Bold Street
86
Time Travel
The subject of time has always intrigued us. Is it as set as we have always believed? Or does time loop back on itself, giving us a glimpse of a shadowy past out of the corner of our eye. Was is just imagination that made us, just for a second, believe we have seen an object or building change before our very eyes into something that looked medieval or maybe not even there?
When this happens we usually shake our heads and put it down to imagination. But over the last few decades, something strange has been happening in or near Bold Street, Liverpool England. Not just a glimpse of the past, but full immersion into the strange and mysterious world of English History, if only for a few moments at a time.
Step Back To The 1950s And 60s
The strange thing about the Bold street time slips, is the actual time and place they are set. In the following cases, the people involved do not go back far in time, but seem to visit a particular decade or decades. So far, most of the sightings have centred around the 1950’s and 60s. This is strange in itself. Most time travel experiences seem to take the recipient back, for example, to the 18th or 19th century . But not in this case.
Are these people simply copying each other in their experiences, or are they genuinely taking a step back in time? The answer to that, has to take into account whether they are doing it deliberately to get noticed, mass hallucination, or are they really experiencing this strange phenomena? And of course the most important point is, the first person that had this experience, obviously totally believed in what he saw, heard and felt.
So, does time flow like a river? Or does it twist and turn, going forward then sweeping back, picking up historic events and placing them down in front of you, if only for a few moments?
Frank and Carol
In this first tale, Frank set off with his wife to go shopping in Liverpool back in 1996. His wife decided that she wanted to go and buy a book at Waterstones the large book store, and they started to walk towards the area of the shop. As they approached Bold street, Frank decided to go to another shop first, but bumped into a friend, and stopped to chat in the street. His wife went ahead without him.
A few moments later, Frank said goodbye, visited his shop and turned to go back to meet his wife. After reaching Bold Street, he headed on towards the bookstore. As he approached, he glanced up and was surprised to see the name, Cripps above the door. As he was about to cross over to see what was going on, a van swept past him with the name Cardin’s on the side. The van drive honked his old fashioned horn and drove past.
Looking around, Frank suddenly realised that things were not quite what they should be. He looked at the cars driving past and realised that they were all old fashioned vehicles such as people would drive back in the 50s and 60s. And then he noticed the people. Men were wearing hats and macs, and the women were dressed in head scarfs, full skirts and had old fashioned hair styles such as women wore just after the war.
By this time, Frank was beginning to feel slightly freaked out. He carried on crossing the road and headed towards the store. As he got closer he noticed through the window, handbags, shoes and umbrellas. Suddenly he saw a young woman standing looking totally bemused, up at the shop sign. She was wearing modern clothes and as she saw him approaching, smiled at him.
Frank went into the shop, closely followed by the young women. When they entered he was surprised and pleased to see that it had indeed turned back into a bookshop. The young women smiled, shook her head and said, 'that was strange, I thought it was a new clothes shop!' then she walked away looking extremely puzzled.
This may sound an unlikely tale, but the odd thing about it is that Frank was in fact a former Police officer who was used to dealing in facts, and definitely wasn't the type of person who would believe in the paranormal.
Frank never stopped talking about it. Was this a time slip? Evidently Cripps was a women’s shop that sold clothes and other goods, and Cardin’s was also a well known Liverpool firm that owned vans around the time Frank found himself in.
Imogen And The MotherCare Store
The second story concerns a young girl by the name of Imogen. She had decided to go into Liverpool to buy her sister Abigail, a few things for her new baby. Upon arriving she was happy to see a new MotherCare store that had opened up on the corner of Lord Street and Whitechapel.
She wandered around the store, and picked up a few baby items such as cardigans, baby bibs, and gloves. She was surprised to see how cheap the items were, but thought they were on offer as the store had just opened. Taking them to the counter, she tried to pay with her credit card. The staff member looked at her suspiciously, and went off to get the manager.
When she came back, she looked at the card and told Imogen that they didn't take cards. So, disappointed, Imogen went and put the items back as she hadn't any money with her.
When she got home, she told her mother what had happened. Her mother was surprised and really puzzled. ‘That store closed years ago,’ she said. 'There is a bank there now, in fact that’s where I have my account'. Not believing her, Imogen took her mother back to the same place the next day. Sure enough the store wasn’t there. It was a bank, just as her mother had told her.
In this tale, Imogen couldn't have gone back to the 60s. The reason being that she would have noticed the money was different. In England we changed from Sterling to Decimal Currency in the 70s. What time did she go back too? Good question.

A Thief Goes Back To 1967
The third tale is of a young man named Sean, who, while shop lifting in Liverpool back in 2006, ran away from a Security Guard and headed down Hanover Street. Trying to shake of the Guard, Sean, 19, turned into a dead end street called Brookes Alley. By this time he was out of breath and started to get a tight sensation in his chest. He soon realised that actually it wasn't a problem with him, but the atmosphere around him.
He waited for the Guard to come around the corner after him, but he never appeared. So, thinking he had given him the slip, he sauntered back out and started to walk down Hanover street again. But he soon realised that something was wrong.
The road looked different, and so did the pavement. He noticed cars driving by that looked very old fashioned, and the road works that he knew were there, were now gone. Soon he saw that the people around him were wearing strange clothes. Crossing over to Bold Street, he noticed that there were traffic lights where there weren't before, and bushes growing around the Lyceum, near a bar that he recognised.
He carried on walking, realising that actually something was really odd. Then he began to panic. He realised that somehow he had stepped back in Time. And the timeslip was not going away.
Then he remember his Cell phone. Taking it out of his pocket, he tried to get a signal, but of course it didn't work. Eventually he began to really panic, but spotted a kiosk selling newspapers and headed over.
Leaning over the Stand, he took a look at the front page of the Daily Post. There in bold lettering was the date. 18th May 1967.
He wondered what to do. What happens if he can't get back to his own time? What about family and friends?
So, speeding up his pace, he reached H. Samuel the Jewelers, and tried his phone once again. This time it worked. Sighing with relief he looked around and realised that he had returned to the present. But the strange thing was, he could still see, down the end of the road, people still walking around in 1967.
By this time Sean had seen enough, and dived onto a bus to go home. When he was interviewed by the local newspaper later, he stated over four times, the exact account.
Now, you may think that Sean was making the story up to escape from the guard. But the strange tale didn't end there. When the Security Guard was interviewed, he stated that when he ran after Sean, and turned down the dead end Alley after him, he said that Sean had completely disappeared!
When the newspaper checked out the facts of Seans story, they found that everything he said was historically accurate.
Timeslip Mystery
These three stories are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many tales from around Liverpool that tell of Timeslips, ghosts and other strange phenomenon. The stories keep coming thick and fast, and of course the more tales, the more likely people will start to believe that they are all being made up, or as the saying goes, Urban Tales. So, what do you think? Real life timeslips, imagination, mass hallucination or purely tales that have started out as fun but have turned into the greatest Urban Legends of all time.
My opinion is that, yes, something did happen. Probably to the first guy, Frank who was just out shopping with his wife. The others? Maybe it was a case of mistaken roads, taking a wrong turning or just a glitch in the persons memory. By the time they get home they totally believe what happened.
Or is it true? There are so many cases concerning Bold Street, and just about anywhere else in Liverpool, that maybe, just maybe they are all living on top of the biggest Timeslip Phenomena in the World.

Hi Nell. Great Hub. I believe in this sort of thing. There was a brilliant English TV comedy called 'Goodnight, Sweetheart' in which Gary (Rodney from 'Only Fools & Horses') found a time slip in Liverpool that transported him back to the War.
One theory on deja vu, is that it is the result of a time slip, and that time has caught us up again.
Not sure on that one, though.
Fascinating! I love reading about stuff like this. And there is SO much in the universe that we don't know...I believe almost anything is possible.
Voted up, awesome, interesting, and shared!
That was great - I love hearing about all of this. The webbot guy has mentioned this before....Awesome. Great hub.
I'd never heard of time slips before. I was on the edge of my seat for this hub. Great hub. Voted accordingly.
That's a fantastic hub. I love the title image. Nice work there! Thank you for sharing.
David
Hi Nell,
Not sure if timeslips are real but this was a fascinating read.
Voted up and away!
Have a good weekend.
cool...while I have not ever had the experience as 'fully' as the ones described above, I have no question that this sort of thing can and does occur.
But you really hit the nail on the head when you said at the beginning of this Hub,
"When this happens we usually shake our heads and put it down to imagination"...
and that is in fact how the vast majority will react when 'the curtain slips, even a little' and we get a glimpse of what underlies the 'solid reality' that we assume is the real world.
Very enjoyable Hub!
Very interesting. Thanks for posting that Nell. I'll have to do some research on that. I have heard of timeslips before, and sometimes people come the opposite way. There was a case I read about of a man in eighteenth century clothes, who suddenly materialised in the middle of a busy street, and was promptly run over and killed by a car.
There are some very strange things happening all around us.
Interesting hub. I have heard a theory that time is not linear but more like a hologram so everything in what we view as the past, present and future is all actually happening right now and it is just that we are tuning into what we regard as our current time. So maybe it is easier to retune in Liverpool for some reason, and access different time frames?
But hey Nell, we have pavements over here, not sidewalks!
Interesting hub, I studied in Liverpool years ago, in the early 70s, unfortunately I didn' t hear any of these happenings. I wish I had. Thanks for sharing.
You have done it again Nell.... captured our attention with your writing.
Hugs
Hi Liz, great hub, I've been to Liverpool and really love it. The title of this hub is brilliant, it drew me in. Voted up and following you :)
I have no doubt that there are time slips, look at the Bermuda Triangle. I love this hub, how scary, but yet fasinating. You've peaked my interest. I'm going to take some time and check out this phenomenon. Again you've top yourself my friend.
Wow! Has any more research been done on others who may have experienced this "timeslip?" Any ideas on why Liverpool and why Broad Street, a busy street in a big city? One of those hoax or reality. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, Nell, this hub really sent shivers down my spine... All things related to time travel and timesplip always fascinated me. Great hub!
This is engrossing. One of my favorite book series, "The Necroscope" has a character, Mobius, who really lived centuries ago and had a theory called the Mobius strip stating if time is linear it's like a strip and can be folded at any point along the line. Wouldn't it be too kewl if that is what is going on? Just imagine, maybe some person that lives nearby is doing it to go back in time and see a lost love.
Nell, you have outdone yourself. You always bring me the best wierd stuffs! Thank you and God bless you and your snooping/writing skills!
Haha! The synchronicitys running strong Nell! You've got an objective look and I've got a subjective look at the phenomena known as time slips. After reading about these most interesting stories-the third one most particularly- I'm beginning to say yes it was, more than no it wasn't. Great article Ms. Nell, thumbs up and ping ping!
What a fascinating hub, Nell! I don't have an opinion about whether the claims that people have made about traveling back in time are true or not. I try to keep an open mind, because I certainly think that there's a lot about reality that we don't understand, but on the other hand the stories may be due to imagination and urban legends. Either way, they were all very interesting and certainly made me think of all sorts of fascinating possibilities! Thank you for a very enjoyable hub.
Wow Nell if I was over there I think I would hang around Liverpool often to maybe catch a glimpse of John or George. Hey why not Paul too, I mean he was there then wasn't he? Many people are still alive from then, would they have to be dead to see them? Couldn't their aura still be there? People claim to hear trains that haven't ran for 50 years so that would not be of spirit but something more...? Do you ever think back and see yourself as a child? You are looking at yourself, how could that be? How can we look at our own selves, ever think about that? We didn't look at ourselves when we were there. Are we still there?
Love these stories Nell. Having worked in Liverpool AND having a paranormal streak, I could definitely see walking down Bold Street into another dimension!
I love something mysterious and you describe all these things very well. You open my eyes about something I didn't know before. Well done and rated up!

What a fascinating Hub. I loved it and you sure can report a story. Why not take it a step 'beyond' and try to locate those shop owners today. If they remember the same incident from the 60's that would make headlines! Cheers.
I have heard of time slips before, maybe on the internet or even hubpages, but had forgotten about it. Traveling back in time is one of the hardest phenomena for me to grasp. Time just seems to keep marching forward at the same rate for me and everyone I know. But I am open-minded and intrigued by such as this. Great article!
Check out my new hub on climate change and the lack of TV coverage, if you can. Thanks.
It reminds me to an interesting story about time tunnel. Wow, I think it's great to have an experience like Sean's, of course, without the shop lifting scene. It's really an interesting hub.
Very interestin! I believe time travel is possible. Maybe one day we will be able to do it on purpose instead of by accident. Thank you for sharing.
Oh, just my cup of tea! I have eighteen hours off, and I had to check in with my Dearie accross the pond... I BELIEVE in time slips, and how I long to walk the cobblestreets of London again, what a beautiful place, and full of poltergeists that turned on my bath tap three times at the Savoy Hotel. That poltergeist just turned on the tap at work 2 days ago!
Sweetie, there is a path in the outer fields, soon to be developed, where I swear, time has utterly slipped it's bonds!
You always pick the most exciting stuff! I have missed you deeply, and i hope this year is your best year ever! Much love! lily
I have always been fascinated by time travel/time slips. I once read "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" in which Thomas travels back and forth between his own land and time to a different land and time. I was fascinated (it was in the 70s). Your hub is very descriptive and could be a novel itself. Each incident sounds so real and your photo selection is great. Definitely voted this one up!
Cripy thing are happening...I just cannot start to imagine because I believe that everithing we can imagine it could become true!
Great job, Nell.
This was awesome hub. I am glad to know this from you. Thanks for share with us. Good work, Nell. Rated up!

Really, really, interesting, Nell. I had never heard of this before but the witnessess do seem quite credible.
I love this one Nell ; it's amazing ;thank you so much for sharing.
Your hubs are always so well presented and interesting; hence all the followers.
Take care Nell and enjoy your day.
Eddy.
By the way did I hear that you'd been asked to go on Television?? Please fill me in with all the details.
Something similar happened to a friend of mine about 20 years ago. He claims to have slipped back to the 1930s while walking in an Old Town section in a city here in Southern California. I always thought he had dreamt it, but with your other occurrences I'm not sure any more. Voting this Up and Interesting.
I saw this link on Alastars story about his strange phenomenon and time slip. I can't get enough of these stories. You wrote these very well and I loved the pictures that illustrated the story. The video was fun to watch too. It would be cool to go back in time when I was a kid and seeing mom and dad again. The first thing I'd do is hug them silly and then I'd make them go swimming at our dock like we always did. Thanks for the magical reading tonight Nell.
Hi, Nell
I loved the Hub and you tell the tales very well. Like many people, I am often fascinated by tales of the paranormal but whether I actually believe them or not is usually a very different thing.
I have read a lot of the works of Professor Stephen Hawking, including his classic, "A Brief History of Time." Although he doesn't reference stories such as this, I am convinced from reading his works that there is more to the fabric of space and time than established scientific theories can explain. So - who knows? Maybe Liverpool really is the gateway to the Twilight Zone...?
I came here after reading Alastar's hub about Time Slips/Paranormal experiences and am glad I did.
I find this topic fascinating and always enjoy a good time slip story. I do believe in paranormal experiences and don't think we know all there is to know about how time really works.
Voted up, useful, awesome and interesting.
Hello Again, Nell,
Yes, I own a copy of What the Bleep and have watched it several times. It's not only educational but very entertaining.
waiting for a time slip with my camera, i don't know why people don't use their mobiles to take picture when they time sliped.
What a fascinating read this is Nell, I loved every part of yoor hub. I was born in Liverpool and so when I watched the video it was lovely to hear that Liverpool accent it took me back to my childhood as the chap sounded just like my uncles :D
You write such interesting hubs and you come up with such unusual material no wonder you have so many followers and you deserve each one. I am voting up and hitting all the buttons on my way out including funny as in funny peculiar lol.... thanks for the great read maggs :D
This is so interesting. You write about some of the things that interest me the most. I never am sure whether I believe in things like this, but they sure do pique my interest. Another great hub.... another great hub ... another great hub ... sorry, I was slipping.
This subject just fascinates me! Thanks so much for your well-written Hub. Now I'll spend a rainy Friday afternoon clicking on your links! I think we have some interests in common.
I am fascinated by all this. I hope in future someone in a time-slip gets out their camera-phone. I wonder if the photograph would show the past or is it only in the mind? And why do the time-slips seem to go to the past and not the future?
Brilliant and top class article Nell. I loved it as I love all this kind of stuff, and yes, I do believe in it.
Nell, what an interesting hub. I wonder if its anything to do with Liverpool being on 'lay lines'? I have heard people talk about places on laylines being very important or unusual is one way or another.
This must really have freaked poor Frank out but it is fascinating. If it happened to me, I'd be worried that I might not get back to 2012. That show, 'Life On Mars' is sort of based on this premise isn't it? Fascinating stuff, voted up, etc, etc.
Nell, I'd never heard of timeslips in Liverpool, but I MAY HAVE experienced one once in London while walking along a street that only moments earlier I *knew* had been paved in modern asphalt. When it registered that it was now paved in cobblestones, it became asphalt again.
Something else happened to me in West Hampstead a few days later. Coming out of the West Hamp tube station puts you on a sort of a hill where you can see a good chunk of the High Street a few blocks ahead. At first it didn't register that I was seeing a scene from the 17th or 18th century "laid over" what was currently happening. An elaborately decorated, but "transparent", coach and four (team of matched horses) was making its way across the street where cars and buses were traveling quite fast in both directions.
Considering the royal family uses similar coaches and four, that's how my brain took it at first...until the coach and horses WENT THROUGH a bus, come out the other side intact, and disappeared into a side street! It then dawned I'd had several similar experiences in the time I'd been in London! It didn't happen, btw, in any other part of England I visited on that trip.
The U.S. version of "Life on Mars" was my absolute favorite show before it was cancelled. Never mind every episode made my brain "hurt" trying to keep track, but I did so love having my brain "stretched to the limit" once a week!
Nell, I chalked up my "layered time" experiences to what you said - that there's thousands of years of history crammed into that one little island. So it should be no surprise the "time continuum" (or whatever it's called) can't keep it contained and one period will "leak" into another.
I don't think that's the explanation for the Bold Street Time Slips, which seems more like a "Bermuda Triangle" door to another dimension. One I'd LOVE to experience sometime! ;D
Hi Nell,
I'm not normally a huge fan of paranormal stories, but your hub made the time slip facet come alive for me. Voted up, interesting, and shared.
I'm reminded of one of my hiking acquaintances. She is elderly, walks with a cane, and is in extraordinarily good shape for her age.
I remember a Fall Colors hike on the Scott Lake trail, not far from Highway 89. When we reached our destination she told us that she was preparing for an upcoming outing in the Peruvian Andes. I remember telling her that if I'd known that she was in training for Peru, I would have put a watermelon in her rucksack.
After returning to NorCal, she shared an experience that was similar to the time slip stories. She saw some shrubbery on the side of the trail. Out of curiosity, she poked her cane into it, but the tip of the cane failed to connect with any of that vegetation. Nevertheless she continued to see the phantom shrubbery, and her cane appeared to be going through it, without disturbing it.
Did she have a vivid dream during her outing, and did she integrate the memory of that dream with her memory of the previous day? Did she have a detailed hallucination that did not affect her other senses? Or was she seeing vegetation that was there at some time in the past?
Hello, NellRose. I am never disappointed when I read your hubs on psychic events, and this one is no exception. What are these events trying to tell us? Thanks for SHARING.
This is fascinating Nell. Reminds me of a program called "Goodnight Sweetheart"
I believe the first story, the second as you say she would have noticed the different currency surely, the third well not sure, he risked being charged with shoplifting telling his story, on the other hand you would have thought a shoplifter would have snatched a newspaper to prove his point.
But I do believe such things happen
Great hub and voting up
Nell, between this and Alastar Packer's time slips hub, I've come to the conclusion what I thought for 20 years was a "ghost train" was actually a time slip. It's the ONLY explanation that makes sense for that particular time and place. I've almost finished my own time ship hub on the experience. Thanks! ;D
That would be awesome I would love to experience this.
This is oh so interesting. This makes me think of recurring residual haunts. Sometimes people see a ghost or ghosts reliving a particular moment before their death, or the moment of death. Usually with these accounts, the ghosts are seen in period clothing. Sometimes the whole scenery can change right in front of the living person, with the living person witnessing the death. This has never happened to me, but if it does, I hope there is someone else around so that I don't have to question my sanity. These occurrences are quite a surprise, and are very unnerving.
Yes, two witnesses are definitely better. This is why the time slip experience of the two ladies in the gardens of Versailles was deemed authentic.
Was it the man who experienced the time slip in Bold Street who said he wished he'd snapped pics with his cell phone (mobile)? I wish he had, too! Especially if it was set to put a time stamp on the photos! ;D
I was absolutely riveted by this. I came here after reading JamaGenee's hub about a ghost train. I'd heard about the timeslip in Liverpool so I was glad to see a hub about it.
I was delighted to find that the timeslip seems to centre around the the 60's. I'd always fantasized about being able to go back to that time period and see history unfolding before me with the eyes of an adult. Could I possibly be able to really live the dream? Scary.
Loved this hub voting it up, interesting and awesome.
Wow...what fantastic hub. Watching and listening to the video made my hair stand on end.I lived in Liverpool many years ago and my Daughter was born there.I had been told about and visited the docks where the slaves would have been kept and are reputed to be haunted. And I also still believe to this day that I once saw a UFO over Netherley. My feeling is that just because you can´t explain or prove something, it doesn´t mean it hasn´t happened. And your 3 accounts seem very believable to me. Voted up and following you. Can´t wait to read more.
Thank you Nell for a great hub.
Fascinating story! I ran across your writing in your comment on Alastar's hub so had to come read some of your writing.
This is very interesting to me! I'm glad you wrote it! Thank you!
amazing story.Thank you
Nell, I was just re-reading the comments and would like to add my 2 cents (or pence!) about camera phones in time slips. I see no technological reason the camera (or video!) function wouldn't record whatever its owner was witnessing in a "slip". But hold off trying to upload or email the pix or video until after returning to the present as there'd be no cell (mobile) towers in a time slip to transmit them! ;D
Had to come back and say that I just saw the latest Woody Allen movie, Midnight In Paris. It was great and beautifully photographed AND had some wonderful time slips in it.
Hey Neil Rose, great story, I really enjoyed it, and inspired me to write a story I had long forgotten! Thanks again and keep them coming!

How fascinating! I believe it - why not? Thanks for sharing the stories.
